What is Throughput?
The number of packets a network can send through itself at any one time
Measured in bits over time (kbps, mbps)
Example: The number of cars that can fit on a road over a given time
At the maximum distance for each switch, we see 100% throughput levels at all frame sizes, indicating that all data was delivered.
What is Frame loss?
The number of packets that get lost over a given cable in a network. Can be affected by internal factor such as network performance, and overall load, or external factors like interference or noise on the lines.
Often measured by percentage of frames lost
Example: The number (or percentage) of cars that don’t make it to their destination
At the maximum distance for each switch, zero frame loss was experienced.
What is Latency?
The time it a takes a packet to get through a network
Measured in time (often milliseconds)
Example: The speed a car can travel on a road at a given time
To ensure the highest quality of service, latency on both switches is minimal at maximum distance. The accepted industry standard for VoIP is 150 milliseconds. Both switches perform at 0.128-0.131 milliseconds (128-131 microseconds) of latency at the maximum frame size tested. This is more crucial for real time applications like voice calls or video conferencing.
Using eight Cisco Catalyst switches to span 2,000ft would result in approximately 1.024 milliseconds (1024 microseconds) of latency, compared to 0.131 milliseconds (131 microseconds) with the CLEER24 switch at the maximum frame size tested.
What is Jitter?
The changes in packet speed over time, causing data bunching. Large amounts of jitter often cause frame loss.
Example: The difference between driving at a consistent speed on the freeway versus driving in stop-and-go traffic
At the maximum distance for each switch, both Cisco and NVT Phybridge show minimum delay variance, giving your traffic exceptional quality of service characteristics for real time applications to work at their very best.
What is Back-to-Back?
Also known as a burst test. Back-to-back tests the network’s ability to overcome variances in traffic load at any given time.
At the maximum distance, both switches can sustain data bursts to ensure that even the largest burst does not cause frame loss or service degradation.
