Global Cruise Operator Modernizes Cruise Vessel with Mitel IP Communication, Reduces Network Readiness Costs by 80%

Problem 

The global cruise operator aimed to modernize onboard communications on one of its cruise vessels to improve operational efficiency and the guest experience. However, the project faced several constraints, including delayed purchase approvals, limited access to the ship while docked, and the high cost and complexity of the traditional network rip-and-replace method. The cruise operator needed an innovative solution to modernize its vessel without complexity, high costs, or long deployment times.  

Solution 

Litenet recommended the NVT Phybridge PoLRE24 and PoLRE48 managed switch solutions to overcome these challenges. The PoLRE24 and PoLRE48 enterprise-grade managed switches deliver Ethernet and PoE over single-pair UTP cable with up to 1,200ft (365m) reach; four times the reach of standard Ethernet switches. 

The PoLRE managed switches transformed the vessel’s existing single-pair UTP infrastructure into a robust, secure, and high-performance PoE backbone for the new Mitel IP devices. Despite tight delivery timelines and logistical pressures, the deployment was completed smoothly through close coordination between Litenet, Mitel, and NVT Phybridge. The simplicity of installation and reliability of the PoLRE solution ensured minimal disruption, even within the constraints of ship access and scheduling.

The organization achieved approximately £169,000 in cost savings and reduced the deployment timeline by four to six months. The solution performed exactly as expected, with no technical issues reported post-installation. This project marked Litenet’s first major success in the cruise sector with this solution and opened the door to expansion across additional vessels.
