Louisiana Sheriff’s Department Saves Over $150,000 During IP Camera Deployment

Sheriff’s Department Deploys Hanwha IP Camera System Across Five Buildings Without High Costs, Complexity, or Disruption

3-minute read time

Summary

  • The Louisiana Sheriff’s Department needed to upgrade its outdated analog surveillance system but faced serious challenges, including extended downtime in secure detention areas.
  • Securitas recommended Modern LAN principles and used NVT Phybridge PoE switch innovations to help the department enable a fast and disruption-free upgrade to Hanwha IP cameras using the existing coax-based infrastructure.
  • The department transitioned to a modern, high-definition surveillance system across five buildings, reclaiming physical space, reducing the total deployment time by 50%, and saving approximately $150,000 in infrastructure costs.
  • By reusing the existing coax-based infrastructure, the customer prevented an estimated 2 tons of electronic waste and avoided significant environmental impact from construction and demolition work.

Problem

The Louisiana Sheriff’s Department needed to modernize its video surveillance system to improve situational awareness, expand security coverage, and respond more quickly to incidents. However, the nature of the facility — a secure, operational detention center — created significant challenges. The department felt trapped, thinking they had to rip and replace the existing network infrastructure to support IP. This would include opening walls, ceilings, and inmate-occupied areas, leading to potential lockdowns, movement restrictions, and several weeks without surveillance — introducing risk and disruption the department could not afford. The Louisiana Sheriff’s Department needed an innovative solution to help them modernize without compromise.

Solution

To avoid the costs and risks of an outdated rip-and-replace strategy, Securitas recommended Modern LAN principles by Frost & Sullivan and the NVT Phybridge CLEER Ethernet over Coax (EoC) innovation to enable IP connectivity over the facility’s existing coax-based infrastructure. The deployment included approximately 147 new IP Hanwha cameras across five buildings. The NVT Phybridge CLEER24-10G switch enabled installers to replace the cameras without interrupting operations in secure areas. Instead of weeks of construction, the project was completed in half the anticipated time – without unnecessary risk, complexity, or security concerns.

Thanks to the flexibility of the NVT Phybridge solution, Securitas was also able to consolidate the surveillance headend from a full room of outdated equipment to just a few compact switches, reclaiming valuable rack space and future-proofing the system for additional upgrades.

Result

The Louisiana Sheriff’s Department avoided over $150,000 in infrastructure and labor costs and prevented several weeks of operational downtime. The upgraded system delivers high-definition video quality with no lag, enables simultaneous multi-camera views in real time, and provides improved visibility from multiple control centers.

Krystal Paul from Securitas reported high satisfaction with the deployment, noting, “The CLEER24-10G solution is extremely flexible; you can basically set up any system you want. I’m happy, the client’s happy, and we were able to provide a very painless transition.”

NVT Phybridge managed switches feature PowerWise® technology, enabling intelligent power sharing across interconnected switches to ensure continuous uptime. Combined with long-reach capabilities and robust PoE performance, these switches enhance system reliability, strengthen security, and reduce operational complexity. The NVT Phybridge CCMT configuration and management tool simplifies switch configuration, enabling bulk actions and automatic, easy firmware upgrades. These capabilities minimize downtime, streamline operations, and reduce ongoing switch management costs by up to 80%, helping organizations maintain a more resilient, efficient network environment.

Sustainability

NVT Phybridge network innovations not only delivered immediate financial and operational benefits but also aligned with the department’s long-term sustainability goals. By leveraging the existing coax-based infrastructure, the customer avoided approximately 2 tons of electronic waste, eliminated unnecessary construction work, and reduced its environmental footprint. This responsible modernization ensures long-term viability without compromising mission-critical security operations.
