Megaplaza Jaén is one of the largest shopping centers in Peru, located in the northern city of Jaén in the Cajamarca Region. Building a robust and complete surveillance solution was of paramount importance to the owners of this modern-day shopping center to ensure the security of all staff and visitors.

Physical Security

Today, the mall is host to a wide variety of businesses, including restaurants, retail outlets, banks, car dealerships, and a movie theatre. Megaplaza Jaén determined that to provide the most effective security to mall staff and visitors, the surveillance system needed to be IP-based, given the higher resolution and more comprehensive applications available. The immense size of the three-story shopping mall presented critical challenges in the implementation of an IP-based security system. The distances required to connect the cameras to areas inside and outside the mall was well beyond the 328ft (100m) reach limitations of standard Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches. Megaplaza Jaén had a robust Coax wiring infrastructure throughout the entire facility that the owners were confident in leveraging to support the new surveillance system. Megaplaza Jaén needed to implement an intelligent, robust, secure and reliable surveillance system, and therefore chose to implement Bosch IP cameras. Now the retailer needed to establish a robust and reliable PoE backbone to support the Bosch IP cameras.

Although the project was facing challenging obstacles, nothing was going to interfere with Megaplaza Jaén’s commitment to safety. By applying Modern LAN principles, Megaplaza Jaén discovered the long reach, Coax to IP enabling CLEER24 switch. The solution allowed the customer to connect the Bosch IP cameras to the reliable Coax infrastructure, and transmit high-quality live video feeds to a centralized monitoring location. The long reach PoE capabilities ensured that cameras could be placed throughout the entire building, ensuring the safety of individuals in all locations including parking lots and loading areas.

Cyber Security

As more and more companies adopt the Internet of Things, cybersecurity has become a top concern. Companies of all sizes and all industries are at risk of malicious activity, especially individuals and groups attempting to steal consumer and company data. The Ponemon Institute found that 7 out of 10 organizations believe their security risk increased significantly in 2017.

In the connected world of the Internet of Things, each “thing” on the network represents a possible entrance for a hacker. In DarkTrace’s Global Threat Report from 2017, it was determined that hackers gained unauthorized access to networks through various IoT devices including smart artboards, thermometers, and server rooms.

For Megaplaza Jaén, the direct point-to-point network topology of the PoE enabling technology, along with the option for a firewall at the convergence point to the main network, ensures robust protection against unauthorized access. Also, the reduction of IDF closet requirements due to long reach PoE innovations means fewer server rooms to keep secure from hackers.

Environmental Responsibility

Megaplaza Jaén was awarded a 5-star IoTG (Internet of Things to the Power of Green) project rating for their environmentally responsible modernization to IP. The company avoided installing new Ethernet cabling and reduced IDF closet requirements

A Better Return on Investment

Megaplaza Jaén took a pro-active approach to find new and better ways to support their IP modernization objectives in a financially and socially responsible manner. By applying Modern LAN principles and leveraging innovative switch technology, Megaplaza Jaén fast-tracked their IP deployment and saved thousands of dollars on infrastructure that can be reallocated to ROI driving applications.

Communication is evolving rapidly, and the days of ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) appear to be numbered. Several of the largest service providers are modernizing their infrastructure from legacy ISDN to IP, and ISDN will most-likely be an obsolete technology by 2025. Organizations must prepare for the future of telephony.

Many notable European service providers are moving on to communication supported by Internet Protocol (IP), including Germany’s Deutsche Telekom, Switzerland’s Swisscom, and the UK’s British Telecom. The trend is clearly to move away from analogue and digital communication. We can only assume the rest of the world will follow in the coming years.

The result? Many organisations are installing analogue converters to connect their legacy phone system to the larger IP network. However, some organisations recognize the value of an all IP communication system and are modernizing their own telephony systems.

Don’t compromise, modernizing to the latest in IP telephony will give your workforce the communication and collaboration tools to excel.

Benefits of IP Voice

  • Collaboration: IP applications allow users to take advantage of video calls, conference calls, instant messaging and more; encouraging collaboration and teamwork
  • Mobility: The modern workplace is highly mobile. IP communication keeps users connected in today’s fast-paced work environment whether they’re in the office, working from home, or at an industry event
  • Scalability: Increasing and decreasing users as business needs evolve is simple and cost-effective
  • Flexibility: Flexible deployment options for each unique business need, including on-premise, cloud, or UCaaS
  • Efficiency: Integrate your IP phone network with third-party applications, such as Outlook and Salesforce, to increase the efficiency of your teams

The common misconception is that organisations must rip-and-replace their existing cabling infrastructure to support these new IP phones. However, new Modern LAN innovation and technology aims to simplify this process, while providing a secure and cost-effective upgrade path.

The award-winning NVT Phybridge portfolio of solutions, with SmartPathPoE™ technology, is designed to transform your existing and secure network into a robust IP backbone to support your new IP endpoints. Our customers enjoy accelerated deployment times, zero business disruption, and a separate and secure network path for voice.
