GNP (Grupo Nacional Provincial) is one of the largest insurance providers in Mexico. The company has several offices throughout the country and primarily provides insurance policies for life, medical, automobile, home, and business. The organization was relying on analog CCTV technology that was unreliable and outdated. GNP wanted to modernize from its outdated system and deploy a new IP surveillance solution to improve security and take advantage of Bosch’s enhanced video analytics.

Challenge

Several network barriers needed to be addressed before the organization could deploy the new IP security solution. The existing CCTV system was supported by a Coax infrastructure in each of the company’s locations. The customer had originally thought about ripping out the existing Coax-based infrastructure in each location and using fiber-optic cabling to extend connectivity beyond the 328ft (100m) reach limitation of standard Ethernet switches. However, this strategy would be extremely costly, disruptive, and time-consuming. GNP was also concerned with the potential business disruption and negative operational impacts as a result of the construction work needed to overhaul the network. The organization required an innovative solution to achieve its digital transformation objectives.

Solution

Given the customer’s modernization challenges, Logen, the reseller partner, recommended NVT Phybridge EoC (Ethernet over Coax) innovations. Logen had used NVT Phybridge products in the past for many other projects and was confident in the technology. GNP was excited with the potential solution and organized a proof-of-concept to test the technology in one of its locations.

After a few simple setup steps, the NVT Phybridge CLEER24 switch transformed the customer’s existing and proven Coax-based infrastructure into a power-packed IP backbone. The CLEER24 switch delivers power and data over a single Coax cable up to 6,000ft (1,830m), that’s 18-times farther than a standard PoE switch. GNP was impressed with the results and decided to move forward with the project using the CLEER24 switch.

Result

GNP was completely satisfied with the entire experience, using the CLEER24 switch to deploy more than 250 Bosch IP cameras across several locations. “Installing the CLEER24 switch was simple, quick, and did not require any special tools,” said Mario Gomez Alvaraez. “The NVT Phybridge team provided excellent technical support and training materials.” The customer was able to avoid the traditional rip-and-replace strategy, leveraging the existing and proven Coax infrastructure to achieve incredible results.

  • Simplify and accelerate the deployment by 40%
  • Reduce total infrastructure costs by 50%
  • Prevent service outages and operational disruption during the upgrade
  • Eliminate IDF closet requirements
  • Maintain a physically separate network for the new Bosch IP security devices
  • Allocate infrastructure cost savings towards more Bosch IP devices and applications

GNP took full advantage of the CLEER24’s feature set. The switches are stacked and configured for power redundancy. Unused ports are locked for enhanced security. All equipment is centralized in one location for better system control.

In early 2017, the Colombian Army finished construction on its state-of-the-art Army Aviation Logistics Center (Spanish acronym, CLAVE). Designed and built by the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, CLAVE is an over 9,000 square meter facility designed to provide support for the transportation, storage, distribution, and security of the Colombian Army’s aeronautical equipment. To comply with international standards for aeronautical logistical activities, the Colombian Government needed to implement a high-level security system. The facility required an IP surveillance system of over 100 cameras to monitor the entire facility and its surroundings.

Challenge

The Colombian Army had previously installed a Coax-based infrastructure to support an IP security system. However, the agency struggled to extend PoE to support the new Bosch IP cameras in all areas of the building. The 328ft (100m) reach limitation of standard PoE switches meant that they would need to install multiple IDF closets, which would be extremely costly and increase network complexity. CLAVE was unsatisfied with the traditional approach to network design, turning to project partners to help find an innovative solution.

Solution

Given the customer’s infrastructure challenges, Colombian distributor SAC was confident in recommending the NVT Phybridge CLEER24 EoC (Ethernet over Coax) managed switch. The award-winning CLEER24 enterprise-grade switch provides Ethernet and PoE+ over Coax with up to 6,000ft (1,830m) reach – 18 times farther than standard PoE switches.

In just a few simple setup steps, the CLEER24 transformed the Coax cabling into the power-packed IP platform needed to support the new Bosch IP cameras while eliminating the need to install costly IDF closets. “In our case where distance limitations were a critical issue, NVT Phybridge made all the difference when other solutions on the market could not,” said Paula Rosana Murillo, Business Development Coordinator at SAC. “Not only did the NVT Phybridge solution take the signal and transmit it through the Coax wiring to extremely far distances, but it also provided power to the IP cameras.”

Result

The Colombian Army was able to quickly and easily deploy over 100 Bosch IP cameras throughout the entire facility with virtually no disruption to operations. For the integrator, this was a professionally enriching experience. “NVT Phybridge, through its Colombian distributor SAC, facilitated access to technical training and support to ensure the proper usage of these products. This allowed the integrator to have greater confidence in the implementation of the technology,” commented Oscar Triviño, Project Manager in charge of the CLAVE facility construction. “The NVT Phybridge CLEER24 solution generated savings of more than $56,000 USD in wiring, electrical infrastructure, and manpower while connecting all cameras to the power source in the most effective way possible.”

The Colombian Government used the NVT Phybridge CLEER24 switch to implement improve the digital transformation project; eliminating risk while creating a robust IP platform. The solution removed all infrastructure barriers, service outages, security risks, network complexities, and wasted budgets. “The NVT Phybridge solution provides exceptional video quality. The Colombian Army is now able to take full advantage of its high-quality, state-of-the-art IP cameras and is incredibly satisfied with the project’s results.”

Megaplaza Jaén is one of the largest shopping centers in Peru, located in the northern city of Jaén in the Cajamarca Region. Building a robust and complete surveillance solution was of paramount importance to the owners of this modern-day shopping center to ensure the security of all staff and visitors.

Physical Security

Today, the mall is host to a wide variety of businesses, including restaurants, retail outlets, banks, car dealerships, and a movie theatre. Megaplaza Jaén determined that to provide the most effective security to mall staff and visitors, the surveillance system needed to be IP-based, given the higher resolution and more comprehensive applications available. The immense size of the three-story shopping mall presented critical challenges in the implementation of an IP-based security system. The distances required to connect the cameras to areas inside and outside the mall were well beyond the 328ft (100m) reach limitations of standard Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches. Megaplaza Jaén had a robust Coax wiring infrastructure throughout the entire facility that the owners were confident in leveraging to support the new surveillance system. Megaplaza Jaén needed to implement an intelligent, robust, secure, and reliable surveillance system, and therefore chose to implement Bosch IP cameras. Now the retailer needed to establish a robust and reliable PoE backbone to support the Bosch IP cameras.

Although the project was facing challenging obstacles, nothing was going to interfere with Megaplaza Jaén’s commitment to safety. By applying Modern LAN principles, Megaplaza Jaén discovered the NVT Phybridge CLEER24 switch. The solution allowed the customer to connect the Bosch IP cameras to the reliable Coax infrastructure, and transmit high-quality live video feeds to a centralized monitoring location. The long-reach PoE capabilities ensured that cameras could be placed throughout the entire building, ensuring the safety of individuals in all locations including parking lots and loading areas.

Cyber Security

As more and more companies adopt the Internet of Things, cybersecurity has become a top concern. Companies of all sizes and all industries are at risk of malicious activity, especially individuals and groups attempting to steal consumer and company data. The Ponemon Institute found that 7 out of 10 organizations believe their security risk increased significantly in 2017.

In the connected world of the Internet of Things, each “thing” on the network represents a possible entrance for a hacker. In DarkTrace’s Global Threat Report from 2017, it was determined that hackers gained unauthorized access to networks through various IoT devices including smart artboards, thermometers, and server rooms.

For Megaplaza Jaén, the direct point-to-point network topology of the PoE enabling technology, along with the option for a firewall at the convergence point to the main network, ensures robust protection against unauthorized access. Also, the reduction of IDF closet requirements due to long-reach PoE innovations means fewer server rooms to keep secure from hackers.

A Better Return on Investment

Megaplaza Jaén took a proactive approach to find new and better ways to support its digital transformation objectives in a financially and socially responsible manner. Megaplaza Jaén used NVT Phybridge Power over Ethernet switches to fast-track its IP camera deployment, saving thousands of dollars on infrastructure that can be reallocated to ROI-driving devices and applications.
