NVT Phybridge & pCare: Cost-Effective IPTV for Sustainable Healthcare

3-minute read time

Summary

  • A healthcare organization serving the New York metropolitan area wanted to deploy IPTV in patient rooms but struggled to deliver reliable connectivity without creating complexity and disruption to patient care.
  • pCare leveraged NVT Phybridge Ethernet over Coax (EoC) extenders to deploy over 550 IPTV devices using existing coax cabling.
  • The organization used NVT Phybridge EoC extenders to deploy IPTV without complexity or disruption while supporting its sustainability initiatives.

Intro

A prominent healthcare institution serving the New York metropolitan area aimed to undergo a significant digital transformation, including implementing IPTV to enhance patient care and operational efficiency.

Problem

The healthcare organization wanted to avoid running new cabling to each patient room due to high costs, complexity, and disruption to patient care. pCare, a leader in interactive patient experience solutions, suggested leveraging the existing coax infrastructure to support the new ITPV system. However, the initial EoC hardware did not deliver a robust and secure connection to the IPTV devices, requiring a better-performing solution.

Solution

The team at pCare discovered NVT Phybridge and was promptly connected to a healthcare digital transformation specialist. The end user customer had an existing Cisco network and wanted to avoid adding switches from other manufacturers. Being vendor agnostic, NVT Phybridge products are tested and approved for interoperability with Cisco networking and unified communication solutions. Therefore, NVT Phybridge recommended its industry-leading portfolio of Ethernet over Coax extender kits to deliver power and data over coax to the new IPTV devices. The Ethernet over Coax extender kits supercharged the downlink ports of the existing Cisco switches to deliver power and data (symmetrical, full duplex) over the existing coax-based infrastructure with up to 6,000ft (1,830m) reach, 18 times farther than standard Ethernet switches.

NVT Phybridge helped pCare organize a no-cost, no-obligation proof of concept to test the solution on-site. pCare was impressed with the outcomes and decided to proceed with the IPTV deployment.

Result

The pCare team used NVT Phybridge Ethernet over Coax extenders to deploy over 550 new IPTV positions throughout a large hospital environment using the existing coax-based infrastructure. As expected, the extender solutions integrated seamlessly with the existing Cisco network to deliver reliable and robust connectivity to the IPTV endpoints. pCare used industry-leading Ethernet over Coax solutions to avoid re-cabling, accelerate deployment times, and reduce network readiness costs.

“The NVT Phybridge solution allowed us to meet the customer’s needs and deploy IPTV in difficult environments without high costs or business disruption,” said Mark Cortina, CTO at pCare. Satisfied with the digital transformation outcomes, the healthcare system plans to leverage NVT Phybridge technology to deploy hundreds more IPTV devices in three more of its hospitals under the same umbrella.

Sustainability

The healthcare system acknowledges the vital link between human health and the well-being of our environment. Through adopting sustainable practices, its mission is to create a healthier environment for patients, teams, and the communities they serve. The organization is dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 through ongoing improvements to ensure responsible progress while upholding its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Further to its sustainability commitments, the hospital leveraged its existing infrastructure assets to eliminate the need to remove and replace the existing coax cabling. When all phases of the digital transformation are complete, it is estimated that the organization will have prevented approximately 18 metric tons of e-waste from entering landfills.
