NVT Phybridge and Anixter Improve IP Surveillance Deployment for European Consumer Goods Distributor

3-minute read time

Summary

  • The customer, a large distributor of consumer goods, needed to update its analog surveillance system and deploy IP cameras for better video quality and monitoring capabilities.
  • The existing analog cameras were too far from the nearest data closet, making it challenging to provide PoE to the new IP cameras without replacing the existing wiring.
  • Anixter and Telefónica recommended NVT Phybridge Ethernet over Coax (EoC) solutions, which helped the customer save over €20,000 and overcome infrastructure barriers, significantly reducing deployment times and complexity during its digital transformation.

Challenge

A major European consumer goods distributor needed to upgrade to an IP surveillance system for better video quality and monitoring capabilities in one of its Spanish warehouses. The organization relied on an outdated analog surveillance system in the warehouse, which was becoming increasingly inefficient. However, the sprawling property immediately posed infrastructure barriers for the customer, as the existing analog cameras were long distances from the IDF closet. Although the customer knew it was imperative to complete the digital transformation, they could not accept the time, complexity, and cost of ripping out the existing infrastructure and replacing it with CAT5/6 Ethernet cabling.

The integrator, Telefónica, knew they needed to provide the customer with a solution that would allow them to complete the digital transformation without the cost and disruption of re-cabling, as other resellers had advised the customer to spend budget on replacing the existing infrastructure. If the customer chose to re-cable the entire facility, they would need to complete the project in various stages, making certain facility areas inaccessible during the infrastructure upgrade. The organization required a unique solution to overcome its infrastructure barriers and complete the IP surveillance upgrade.

Solution

Anixter and Telefónica recommended NVT Phybridge long-reach Power over Ethernet solutions to overcome the project’s barriers. Having successfully used these products before, both Anixter and Telefónica were confident in recommending NVT Phybridge Ethernet over Coax EoC solutions to help the customer improve its digital transformation. In just a few simple set-up steps, the NVT Phybridge EoC switches transformed the customer’s existing coax infrastructure into a robust and secure IP backbone for the new IP cameras. NVT Phybridge EoC switches deliver up to 50 watts of power (PoE++) and 10/100 Mbps symmetrical, full duplex, over coax cabling with up to 6,000ft (1,830m) reach, which is 18 times farther than standard solutions. The customer was thrilled at the technology’s ability to provide PoE to cameras furthest from the IDF closet.

Result

The customer saved over €20,000 in infrastructure costs using NVT Phybridge EoC solutions. As a result, the customer purchased all cameras required for the project simultaneously instead of in different stages, which would not have been possible if they had chosen to re-cable the facility. “Anixter feels very supported in proposing NVT Phybridge solutions, because they offer excellent pre-sales and post-sales support,” said Susana Vila, Anixter, Account Manager.

By utilizing the long-reach capabilities of NVT Phybridge solutions, the customer eliminated the need for additional IDF closets to centralize network connectivity and overcome infrastructure barriers. The customer also enhanced security by maintaining a physically separate network for the new IP surveillance system. The customer and the project partners were extremely satisfied with the outcome.

When asked for their thoughts on the NVT Phybridge solutions, the IT Director for the customer commented, “the high power delivered by NVT Phybridge PoE switches has allowed us to provide stability to our CCTV networks, avoiding loss of service in those cases where the switch electrically feeds multiple cameras. It also allowed us to have a connectivity solution where the camera is more than 100 meters away, without the need to install a power cable for the camera, thus avoiding additional costs and simplifying installation.”
