PCI and EMV Compliance is a step towards combating fraudulent activity at fuel pumps by increasing payment security using a more-secure chip-and-pin payment system. As fuel stations become one of the most targeted establishments for payment fraud, merchants using older OPT (Outside Payment Terminals) systems that read the credit card’s magnetic stripe will bear the financial burden of any fraudulent activity. To become PCI/EMV compliant and avoid this risk, fuel stations must upgrade outdoor POS terminals to chip-and-pin readers.
As of April 2021, costs associated with fraudulent activity will shift from financial institutions to merchants if these outside payment terminals are not upgraded to EMV-compliant chip and pin card readers. This deadline was initially set for October 2017, then pushed out three years to October 2020. Instances of fraud continue to rise at fuel pumps, and owners of these establishments need to upgrade now.
The deadline to become EMV compliant has been moved out again, this time only a few months, to April 2021. This means fuel stations have just a few months to plan and deploy the new chip and pin technology. It’s getting down to crunch time, and we do not expect the deadline to be extended.
