GNP (Grupo Nacional Provincial) is one of the largest insurance providers in Mexico. The company has several offices throughout the country and primarily provides insurance policies for life, medical, automobile, home, and business. The organization was relying on analog CCTV technology that was unreliable and outdated. Challenge

Several network barriers needed to be addressed before the organization could deploy the new IP security solution. A Coax infrastructure supported the existing CCTV system in each of the company’s locations. The customer had initially thought about ripping out the existing Coax-based infrastructure in each location and using fiber-optic cabling to extend connectivity beyond the 328ft (100m) reach limitation of standard Ethernet switches. However, this strategy would be extremely costly, disruptive, and time-consuming. GNP was also concerned with the potential business disruption and negative operational impacts as a result of the construction work needed to overhaul the network. Solution

In 2011, the organization made the decision to improve its communication capabilities by modernizing to an IP-based solution across all 115 buildings on campus. The university chose to leverage its existing and proven CAT3 voice infrastructure to build a physically separate network for the IP solution using the NVT Phybridge UniPhyer switch.

Eight years later, the university was still completely satisfied with the performance of the UniPhyer solution. However, since the deployment in 2011, many new IP voice solutions were brought to market. The customer was interested in taking advantage of these new capabilities and decided to modernize to a Cloud-based solution across the campus.

As part of the technology refresh, the university wanted to modernize from the UniPhyer to the next generation of innovations from NVT Phybridge; given the enhanced capabilities. The organization was interested in the PoLRE® (Power over Long Reach Ethernet) switch due to its advanced feature set, which includes power-sharing for redundancy, load balancing, hot-swappable power supply, port monitoring, MAC address locking, transparency mode, and its energy efficiency. However, the organization was hesitant to upgrade the network due to concerns of cost, disruption, IDF closet requirements, and implementing a network topology that would most effectively support a hosted IP solution.

Modern LAN Design

Due to the incredible success in 2011 with the UniPhyer solution, the customer turned to NVT Phybridge for advice. Network consultants at NVT Phybridge examined the challenges and assured the organization that leveraging Modern LAN design and the PoLRE switch would be as simple, secure, and cost-effective as the UniPhyer solution. The university was pleased with the response and scheduled a no-obligation proof of concept to test the switch in one of the libraries on campus. The test took place in the library because it was the oldest building on campus, and the customer anticipated the environment to be the most difficult. If the solution worked in the library, the customer was confident it would work in all other locations.

Just as the UniPhyer did in 2011, the award-winning PoLRE solution transformed the existing CAT3 voice infrastructure into a robust and secure IP backbone for the new Cloud-based solution. The university was impressed and decided to move forward to achieve incredible results.

  • The organization was able to reuse its existing voice infrastructure; preventing over 8 tons of cabling e-waste from ending up in a landfill
  • Eliminating the need to rip-and-replace the existing infrastructure also significantly reduced material consumption, as no renovations were required
  • The solution eliminated the need for additional server closets; reducing ongoing energy consumption to cool and power the equipment

International Hotel and Resort Chain Creates a Secure and Robust Surveillance Network Using NVT Phybridge FLEX24 Power over Ethernet (PoE) Switches

The International Hotel and Resort Company was the world’s first luxury hotel brand. The organization opened its first hotel in 1949 and has since expanded across the globe to include a rich and varied portfolio. Each hotel has its own distinctive style, from iconic historic elegance to lavish resort destinations.

The organization’s luxurious resort in Cozumel, Mexico sits on a tropical Caribbean island surrounded by one of the world’s largest coral reef systems. Guests can enjoy the elegant beachside infinity pool, relax in the spa, or experience authentic cuisine at one of the many oceanside restaurants. However, the resort still required a robust surveillance system to ensure the safety of staff and guests.

The organization encountered several challenges as they planned the digital transformation. The resort had no existing surveillance system and needed to establish the necessary network infrastructure to support it. The organization was hesitant to consolidate the surveillance system and IP cameras onto the core business network, due to cybersecurity and network complexity concerns. There were also questions about how they would support the IP cameras across the entire facility, given the 328ft (100m) reach limitations of standard Ethernet switches. The organization was not willing to disrupt guests with the construction of IDF closets and new cable conduits throughout the facility. Unsatisfied with traditional network design philosophies, the customer looked for an innovative solution.

The Cozumel Resort discovered the NVT Phybridge FLEX24 long reach Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch and engaged with an NVT Phybridge digital transformation specialist to learn more. The customer was introduced to Modern LAN design, which helps simplify and accelerate IP modernization while creating a cyber-secure and robust IP-enabled network. The organization was impressed and decided to test the solution in their environment with a free, no-obligation proof of concept.

After a few simple setup steps, the award-winning FLEX24 switch delivered fast Ethernet and PoE++ using a single category 6 cable to 2,000ft (610m); six times farther than a standard PoE switch. The Cozumel Resort was impressed with the solution and decided to move forward with the IP surveillance deployment, using the FLEX24 switch and Modern LAN Principles to achieve incredible results.

NVT Phybridge Case Study: Port of Alexandria

The Port of Alexandria is the main port in Egypt, handling approximately 55% of the country’s international trade. The port is located in the city of Alexandria, the second-largest city in Egypt, where the Nile River meets the Mediterranean Sea. The port was relying on an outdated analog CCTV surveillance system that could no longer meet the growing demands of the organization and decided to modernize to a new IP surveillance solution.

The organization encountered several challenges as they planned the digital transformation. The new IP security cameras would need to be deployed in several zones across the massive port that spans more than 22 km2. Discussions were held around ripping out the existing coax-based infrastructure and installing Ethernet and fiber-optic cabling throughout the facility. However, the organization was hesitant to apply this strategy due to extremely high infrastructure costs and long deployment times. Additionally, this strategy would severely disrupt the daily operations of the port, which moves more than 17 million tons of cargo annually. Unsatisfied with the traditional approach to network design, the Port of Alexandria searched for an alternative solution.

Modern LAN Innovation

The Technical Research Department of Egypt discovered NVT Phybridge and its award-winning IP over Coax solutions. The agency recommended the solution to the Port of Alexandria, which engaged with a digital transformation specialist from NVT Phybridge. The organization was impressed with the solution but was unsure if it would work in their environment, given the immense scale of the project.

NVT Phybridge helped the customer schedule a no-obligation proof-of-concept to test the Modern LAN enabling solution. After a few simple setup steps, the enterprise-grade CLEER24 PoE switch transformed the existing Coax-based infrastructure into a robust and secure IP backbone for the new IP cameras. The CLEER24 solution allowed the customer to extend data and power over Coax with up to 6,000ft (1,830m) reach; 18 times farther than standard PoE switches.

The Port of Alexandria was impressed with the solution and was confident that Modern LAN design would allow them to achieve a simple, secure, and cost-effective upgrade to IP. The customer was completely satisfied, as they leveraged Modern LAN principles 2, 3, and 4 to achieve incredible results.
