The FLEX24-10G does not replace a WAN-facing router.

The FLEX24-10G is a layer 3 managed switch, replacing the need for separate layer 2 and layer 3 devices. Historically, networks contain layer 2 switches to connect clients to the network and help segment the clients using VLANs. For devices on different networks to communicate, a layer 3 device is required (typically a router). A layer 3 switch contains both routing and switching technologies, reducing the need for separate layer 2 and layer 3 devices.

802.1x Port-Based Authentication

Harden your network by requiring endpoints to authenticate against a RADIUS server before access is granted.

802.1x Port-Based Authentication provides an additional level of security for clients trying to gain access to the network. In an unprotected network, clients can gain access directly via Ethernet or wirelessly via Wi-Fi. 802.1x authentication occurs before a client has an IP address. A client is only given access to the network once it has passed 802.1x authentication. In the case of a workstation PC, the user will be prompted for a username and password, which is then checked against a RADIUS server located elsewhere on the network.

ACLs (Access Control Lists)

Permit, deny, or redirect traffic using layer 2, layer 3, or layer 4 header rules.

Access control lists are used to permit or deny network traffic based on administrator-configured rules. ACLs inspect network traffic based on content in the layer 2, layer 3, or layer 4 packet header. If a preconfigured condition is met, the traffic can be permitted, denied, redirected, or filtered to another interface. ACLs are an excellent way to prevent traffic in one area of the network from reaching another area.

The FLEX24-10G switch features a completely overhauled command line interface (CLI). The new CLI features several CLI levels where the scope of commands vary from level to level. Those familiar with the Cisco CLI should feel very comfortable transitioning to the FLEX24-10G. All the features you would expect are present, including tab completion, configurable user privilege levels, and a context-sensitive help system.

Multi-Switch Management Software (CCMT)

Remotely manage your inventory of NVT Phybridge managed switches via one simple-to-use application.

The CCMT tool allows multiple NVT Phybridge managed switches to be managed from a central application. The CCMT tool works on a client-server model, where switches are imported to the server and can then be managed from any client. Routine tasks, such as IP configuration, configuration file importing and exporting, and several more can be performed. Firmware upgrades can be performed in bulk, greatly reducing the administrative workload when several switches need to be upgraded. If multiple switches share a common configuration, the CCMT config templates can be utilized to apply a common config to several devices.

Protocol-Based VLANs

Assign traffic to VLANs dynamically based on the layer 4 header.

Protocol-based VLANs allow network traffic to be assigned a VLAN ID based on the contents of the layer 4 header. This allows administrators to separate different traffic types. For example, SSH traffic on an interface configured with a protocol-based VLAN can be assigned the management VLAN’s VLAN ID. Likewise, HTTP/HTTPS traffic can be assigned the data VLAN’s VLAN ID. Protocol-based VLANs allow network segmentation to be performed at the endpoint, increasing network security.

LLDP-MED

Auto-configure LLDP-MED compatible endpoints with VLAN, QoS markings, DSCP values, and more.

LLDP-MED is an extension of LLDP and operates between endpoints and the FLEX24-10G switch. LLDP-MED determines the capabilities of LLDP-MED compatible endpoints, most commonly IP phones, and applies a policy to the endpoint based on the endpoint’s requirements. LLDP-MED policies can apply attributes such as VLAN ID, QoS markings, DSCP values, and more to compatible endpoints. The use of LLDP-MED can greatly reduce administrator workload in environments with large amounts of endpoints.

QoS – Traffic Shaping and Queueing

Prioritize mission-critical traffic to maintain performance during congestion.

Quality of Service (QoS) allows for priority levels to be assigned to network traffic so high priority traffic can be prioritized by the switch. The FLEX24-10G switch allows for QoS to be configured at both layer 2 and layer 3. QoS is extremely beneficial in environments running both VoIP systems and computer workstations. For example, QoS can be used to give VoIP traffic a higher priority than web traffic to ensure high call quality between parties.
