NVT Phybridge and Anixter Improve IP Surveillance Deployment for European Consumer Goods Distributor

3-minute read time

Summary

  • The customer, a large distributor of consumer goods, needed to update its analog surveillance system and deploy IP cameras for better video quality and monitoring capabilities.
  • The existing analog cameras were too far from the nearest data closet, making it challenging to provide PoE to the new IP cameras without replacing the existing wiring.
  • Anixter and Telefónica recommended NVT Phybridge Ethernet over Coax (EoC) solutions, which helped the customer save over €20,000 and overcome infrastructure barriers, significantly reducing deployment times and complexity during its digital transformation.

Challenge

A major European consumer goods distributor needed to upgrade to an IP surveillance system for better video quality and monitoring capabilities in one of its Spanish warehouses. The organization relied on an outdated analog surveillance system in the warehouse, which was becoming increasingly inefficient. However, the sprawling property immediately posed infrastructure barriers for the customer, as the existing analog cameras were long distances from the IDF closet. Although the customer knew it was imperative to complete the digital transformation, they could not accept the time, complexity, and cost of ripping out the existing infrastructure and replacing it with CAT5/6 Ethernet cabling.

The integrator, Telefónica, knew they needed to provide the customer with a solution that would allow them to complete the digital transformation without the cost and disruption of re-cabling, as other resellers had advised the customer to spend budget on replacing the existing infrastructure. If the customer chose to re-cable the entire facility, they would need to complete the project in various stages, making certain facility areas inaccessible during the infrastructure upgrade. The organization required a unique solution to overcome its infrastructure barriers and complete the IP surveillance upgrade.

Solution

Anixter and Telefónica recommended NVT Phybridge long-reach Power over Ethernet solutions to overcome the project’s barriers. Having successfully used these products before, both Anixter and Telefónica were confident in recommending NVT Phybridge Ethernet over Coax EoC solutions to help the customer improve its digital transformation. In just a few simple set-up steps, the NVT Phybridge EoC switches transformed the customer’s existing coax infrastructure into a robust and secure IP backbone for the new IP cameras. NVT Phybridge EoC switches deliver up to 50 watts of power (PoE++) and 10/100 Mbps symmetrical, full duplex, over coax cabling with up to 6,000ft (1,830m) reach, which is 18 times farther than standard solutions. The customer was thrilled at the technology’s ability to provide PoE to cameras furthest from the IDF closet.

Result

The customer saved over €20,000 in infrastructure costs using NVT Phybridge EoC solutions. As a result, the customer purchased all cameras required for the project simultaneously instead of in different stages, which would not have been possible if they had chosen to re-cable the facility. “Anixter feels very supported in proposing NVT Phybridge solutions, because they offer excellent pre-sales and post-sales support,” said Susana Vila, Anixter, Account Manager.

By utilizing the long-reach capabilities of NVT Phybridge solutions, the customer eliminated the need for additional IDF closets to centralize network connectivity and overcome infrastructure barriers. The customer also enhanced security by maintaining a physically separate network for the new IP surveillance system. The customer and the project partners were extremely satisfied with the outcome.

When asked for their thoughts on the NVT Phybridge solutions, the IT Director for the customer commented, “the high power delivered by NVT Phybridge PoE switches has allowed us to provide stability to our CCTV networks, avoiding loss of service in those cases where the switch electrically feeds multiple cameras. It also allowed us to have a connectivity solution where the camera is more than 100 meters away, without the need to install a power cable for the camera, thus avoiding additional costs and simplifying installation.”

Quickly Deploy IP Devices in Elevator Cabins Using Existing Traveler Cables

Quick Guide for Enabling IP Devices in Elevators

NVT Phybridge networking solutions can grow modularly from 1 to 4. Therefore, if the number exceeds four units, it must be treated as a new solution with the difference in remaining equipment. Below are four scenarios for transmitting IP signals through traveling cables in vertical transport. The solutions below provide the ability to connect IP signals from the elevator cabin to the machine room. Before starting a project, the following questions must be answered to identify and support the best solution:

  1. What is the distance of the traveling cable?
  2. What is the potential power consumption of the IP devices in the elevator cabin (this is to determine if power can be delivered from the switch in the machine room or if the device(s) must be locally powered)?
  3. What types of cables are available within the traveling cable?
  4. What is the total number of devices to be placed in each cabin?
  5. What is the total number of elevators communicating with the machine room?
  6. Are you connecting to a Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch in the machine room?

Once these six questions are answered, the design phase is very simple. Four applications can be used, and the cable type must be known. These four applications can be connected in Star or Bus configuration.

historic hotel

Historic Hotel Improves Its Digital Transformation Outcomes Using NVT Phybridge Ethernet over Coax (EoC) Technology

3-minute read time

Summary

  • A historic property wanted to deploy Juniper-Mist wireless access points but struggled with infrastructure barriers.
  • The customer was not able to lay new cable throughout the building due to historic property preservation restrictions.
  • The organization used NVT Phybridge Ethernet over Coax (EoC) solutions to overcome infrastructure barriers, reducing project costs and deployment times.

Challenge

A property management group needed to deploy Wi-Fi access points in one of its historically preserved properties. The building relied on an outdated Wi-Fi system and wanted to improve connectivity. The organization wanted to deploy Juniper-Mist wireless access points but struggled with high costs and infrastructure barriers posed by the historic building preservation laws.

Historic preservation laws often prevent organizations from re-wiring network infrastructure, opening walls, or changing a building’s structure to protect its iconic appearance. If renovations are possible, they are bound by strict regulations, which increase project costs, project timelines, and business disruption. “Rewiring means construction, which in historic buildings is a very expensive proposition,” said the project’s Network Architect. The organization needed an innovative solution to overcome its infrastructure barriers and modernize its Wi-Fi capabilities.

Solution

After thoroughly researching products available to solve the network and infrastructure concerns, the customer discovered NVT Phybridge Ethernet over Coax (EoC) solutions and contacted NVT Phybridge directly to organize a no-obligation proof-of-concept. In just a few simple set-up steps, the NVT Phybridge EoC switches transformed the customers’ existing coax infrastructure into a robust and secure IP backbone for the new Wi-Fi access points. NVT Phybridge EoC switches deliver up to 50 watts of power (PoE++) and 10/100 Mbps symmetrical, full duplex, over coax cabling with up to 6,000ft (1,830m) reach, which is 18 times farther than standard solutions. The customer was extremely impressed with the proposed solution and decided to move forward with the project.

Result

The customer estimated that NVT Phybridge EoC innovations reduced network infrastructure costs by more than $60,000 and prevented over 2 tons of cabling e-waste, based on port count. “The NVT Phybridge switches cut [deployment] times in half by removing infrastructure complexity,” said the Network Architect. “NVT Phybridge made this project possible, regardless of cost. [The project] would not have been possible without the long reach EoC switches and the ability to pass PoE over coax.”

The historic hotel achieved its digital transformation objectives and met aggressive timelines while eliminating infrastructure concerns, high costs, and business disruption. The Juniper-Mist wireless access points provide robust and secure network connectivity to guests and employees throughout the property. “NVT Phybridge technology has expanded the types of properties we’re able to bring into our hotel portfolio as we are able to onboard them faster and for significantly less money,” said the Network Architect. “NVT Phybridge was the perfect fit for our requirements and essentially made the project possible.”

Understanding the Differences Between MoCA (Multimedia Over Coax Alliance) and BroadR-Reach Technology for Ethernet over Coax Applications

What is MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance)?

Multimedia Over Coax Alliance (MoCA), founded in 2004, was developed by the Multimedia over Coax Alliance as a standard for networking over coaxial cable. The technology was originally developed for residential applications to distribute IP television in homes using the existing coax cabling. Today, MoCA devices are also used as an Ethernet link using a coax cable.

What are the Limitations of MoCA Devices?

The maximum transmission distance for a MoCA device depends on the version of MoCA being used and the quality of the existing coaxial cable infrastructure. It’s worth noting that the actual transmission distance can be affected by various factors, such as the quality of the coaxial cable. The greater the distance, the lower the available bandwidth. Additionally, the presence of splitters or other devices, the type of MoCA adapter used, and the level of interference from other electronic devices will also affect the transmission quality.

The transmission speeds will also differ between the varying products available on the market. The MoCA transmission provides a shared half-duplex link between all directly connected devices. Therefore, the number and type of MoCA devices and endpoints will affect the overall available bandwidth and speed.

MoCA Technology Standards

  • MoCA 1.0 has a maximum distance of around 300 meters (984 feet) and supports transmission speeds of up to 135Mbps.
  • MoCA 2.0 has a maximum distance of around 185 meters (607 feet) and supports transmission speeds of up to 1Gbps.
  • MoCA 2.5, the third version of MoCA, has a maximum distance of around 500 meters (1,640 feet) and can support transmission speeds of up to 2.5Gbps.

What is BroadR-Reach?

Developed by Broadcom, BroadR-Reach technology is an Ethernet physical layer that was originally designed for Ethernet over twisted-pair wiring in automotive applications. NVT Phybridge leveraged BroadR-Reach technology to develop a product set that builds on the BroadR-Reach signal format to allow for fast Ethernet transmission over single-pair UTP, multi-pair UTP, and coax cable at extended distances.

The NVT Phybridge CLEER24-10G switch extends Ethernet over new or existing coax wiring infrastructure, providing Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) connectivity over distances of up to 915 meters (3,000 feet) and 10Mbps up to 1,820 meters (6,000 feet).

Is BroadR-Reach Better than MoCA?

The short answer is yes, especially for commercial, industrial, and enterprise applications.

Unlike MoCA, the CLEER24-10G switch (using BroadR-Reach technology) provides a dedicated 100Mbps full-duplex transmission per downlink port. Therefore, there is no bandwidth sharing or degradation. Additionally, the CLEER24-10G switch offers a longer range than MoCA devices.

Both the CLEER24-10G switch and MoCA technologies are designed to provide high-speed data transfer, but they are intended for different types of use cases and employ different transmission technologies. The CLEER24-10G managed switch is an enterprise-grade solution delivering PoE+ with layer 3 functionality, while most MoCA devices are single-channel, unmanaged devices.

While MoCA is traditionally a home networking solution that uses existing coaxial cable, the CLEER24-10G switch provides robust and secure Ethernet over Coax at extreme distances, perfect for industrial, commercial, and enterprise network applications. Unlike MoCA devices that do not scale well due to their signaling format and crosstalk issues, the CLEER24-10G switch (using BroadR-Reach technology) provides industry-leading scalability and performance, even at extended distances.

  • The reseller partner, Innovative Telephone & Data Solutions, recommended the NVT Phybridge PoLRE switch to overcome the project’s barriers A multinational chemical and consumer goods company with leading innovations in adhesive technologies, beauty care, and home care made a global decision to standardize its communication solutions. The organization wanted to deploy Skype for Business and Microsoft Teams

Challenge

After surveying the customer’s environment, project partners determined the site’s network infrastructure wasn’t ready to support the new IP phone system. A CAT3 wiring infrastructure supported the existing communication system, and the project planners did not budget for the high costs of wide-scale re-cabling efforts across the organization. Concerned with business disruption caused by re-cabling requirements, the customer halted the project while the partners searched for an innovative solution.

Solution

Brad Batten from Innovative Telephone & Data Solutions introduced the NVT Phybridge PoLRE switch and organized a free, no-obligation proof-of-concept to test the equipment on site. The PoLRE switch delivers Ethernet and PoE over single-pair UTP cabling with up to 1,200ft (365m) reach – four times the reach of standard Ethernet switches. After a few simple setup steps, the PoLRE switch transformed the customer’s existing CAT3 wiring infrastructure into a secure and robust PoE backbone for the new enterprise communication solution. The customer was impressed with the PoLRE switch and restarted the project.

Result

The customer used the PoLRE switch to deploy over 1,100 IP phones across the organization without disruption or downtime, giving employees the latest communication applications and capabilities. “The NVT Phybridge PoLRE switch reduced deployment complexity as [the customer] did not need to schedule its operations around disruptive cable installations,” said Brad Batten. “This alone cut labor costs significantly as less overtime and off-hour work was required.” The PoLRE switch helped the customer save an estimated $750,000 USD in network infrastructure costs. “The reach capability of the PoLRE switch solved the distance requirements without re-cabling,” said Brad Batten. “Without the PoLRE switch, we would have needed to increase the data infrastructure, deploy new IDF closets, fiber, and other electronics to support them.”

ONE-TOUCH Leverages Existing Network Infrastructure to Improve the Digital Transformation Project

*3-minute read time*

Summary

  • A childcare center in Brussels, Belgium, wanted to upgrade its existing analogue intercom system and deploy a new IP intercom and access control solution.
  • The customer wanted to avoid the high costs, disruption, and complexity of re-cabling the facility.
  • ONE-TOUCH used NVT Phybridge PoLRE switches to overcome infrastructure barriers and complete the digital transformation project without disruption, downtime, or security concerns.

Digital Transformation Objectives

A childcare center in Brussels, Belgium, wanted to upgrade its existing analogue intercom system with a new IP intercom and access control solution using the existing 2-wire infrastructure. The organization wanted to use internet-connected intercoms and access control devices to improve operations and increase the safety of the childcare facility.

Problem

However, with a defined budget and limited tolerance for business disruption, the childcare center wanted to avoid the high costs, complexity, and disruption of removing and replacing its existing cabling infrastructure. Project partners needed to find an innovative solution to overcome the cost and complexity caused by traditional network design philosophies.

Solution

Considering the customer’s digital transformation challenges, the reseller partner, ONE-TOUCH, recommended the NVT Phybridge PoLRE switch and helped organize a no-cost, no-obligation proof-of-concept to test the technology on-site. The PoLRE switch delivers fast Ethernet and PoE over single-pair UTP cable with up to 1,200ft (365m) reach, which is four times the reach of standard switches.

After a few simple setup steps, the PoLRE long-reach PoE switch transformed the customer’s existing 2-wire infrastructure into a robust and secure PoE backbone for the IP devices. The customer was impressed and decided to move forward with the digital transformation project.

Digital Transformation Outcomes

ONE-TOUCH used PoLRE switches to deploy the new IP intercom and access control system without tampering with the newly renovated childcare center. PoLRE’s long-reach capabilities enabled devices exactly where they were needed and helped the customer reduce network readiness costs by several thousand Euros. “The PoLRE switch significantly simplified the digital transformation project by reducing the time and cost requirements,” said Vincent Matthys, Director of European Sales & Business Development at NVT Phybridge. “Re-wiring the facility would have been a financial disaster, not to mention the business disruption, network downtime, and security concerns.”

The children’s parents now have access cards to allow only permitted access to the building. “The PoLRE switch was straightforward and fast to deploy without disruption to their operations,” said Olivier Van Tricht, Owner of ONE-TOUCH. “The PoLRE switch’s unique feature set has allowed us to expand our addressable market. We can now help our customers deploy the latest IP solutions without the need to re-cable while delivering power and data over a single cable four times farther than other solutions.”
