TeleDynamics & NVT Phybridge Help Chelsea Piers Modernize Communication Without High Costs or Downtime

3-minute read time

Summary

  • Chelsea Piers wanted to upgrade its communication capabilities throughout its waterfront sports village.
  • TeleDynamics recommended the PoLRE long-reach PoE switch to leverage the customer’s existing network infrastructure.
  • Chelsea Piers deployed over 300 IP communication devices overnight without high costs, complexity, or business disruption.

The Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex is a 28-acre waterfront sports village located between 17th and 23rd Streets along Manhattan’s Hudson River. The major public recreation center offers sports amenities, event spaces, youth programs, competitive leagues, childcare, and much more.

Problem

Chelsea Piers wanted to upgrade its outdated communication system with a cloud-based IP PBX telephony solution. However, network readiness requirements threatened the project with high costs, extended timelines, and physical limitations caused by the 330ft (100m) reach of standard switches. Chelsea Piers needed to deliver PoE over its existing single-pair UTP cabling to IP devices across the vast 28-acre sports village with minimal downtime.

Solution

Given the customer’s digital transformation obstacles, the reseller partner, TeleDynamics, recommended NVT Phybridge and its long reach Power over Ethernet technologies. TeleDynamics had used NVT Phybridge products in the past and recommended the PoLRE line of products. The NVT Phybridge 24 and 48-port PoLRE PoE switches deliver fast Ethernet and PoE over single-pair UTP cabling with up to 1,200ft (365m) reach – four-times farther than standard switches.

TeleDynamics helped Chelsea Piers organize a no-cost, no-obligation proof-of-concept to test the technology in its environment. After a few simple setup steps, the PoLRE switch transformed the customer’s existing infrastructure into a robust and reliable PoE backbone for the new IP communication devices.

Result

TeleDynamics used NVT Phybridge PoLRE PoE switches to support the deployment of more than 300 new IP communication devices across the 28-acre sports village. “Everything went smoothly, from the early planning stages to the activation of nearly 300 devices,” said Stuart Sheinbaum, Director of Communications at Chelsea Piers. “The NVT Phybridge switch was instrumental in ensuring this massive project was a success. When we consider the sheer physical size of the environment of four city blocks and over 500,000 square feet, there was a real potential for error and complexity. The PoLRE switch helped us complete the massive cutover in just one night, flawlessly deploying over 300 devices with everything up and running the next business morning!”

TeleDynamics allowed Chelsea Piers to leverage its existing network infrastructure to avoid the risk, high costs, and complexity of re-cabling. “If we were to re-cable, we would have needed to build out several IDF closets per pier, with fiber uplinks between them and switching capacity/throughput for each,” said Stuart Sheinbaum. “The ability to use our existing CAT3 cabling throughout our widespread facility was a key determining factor in moving forward with the NVT Phybridge PoLRE switch. Re-cabling all our different locations with CAT6 cable would have been a monumental and prohibitively expensive task. The PoLRE switch was our golden opportunity to seamlessly upgrade our communication systems to a state-of-the-art system at a reasonable cost.”

“Working with the NVT Phybridge team was a breeze,” said Rolando Giz, Director of Sales, Service, and Implementation at TeleDynamics. “Their teams worked hard to get us competitive pricing in a timely manner. They also got us a demo unit which helped provide proof-of-concept to the end user. The NVT Phybridge team met very aggressive timelines while dealing with historic supply chain issues. I look forward to our next project with NVT Phybridge.”

Hitachi Rail

NVT Phybridge Case Study: Hitachi Rail Deploys New IP Cameras System Using Existing Coax Network Infrastructure

3 minute read time

Summary

  • Hitachi Rail needed to upgrade from an analog to an IP camera system
  • Installing new CAT6 infrastructure would be too costly and disruptive
  • Hitachi Rail leveraged existing coax cabling to improve the digital transformation outcomes

Hitachi Rail, a subsidiary of Japanese conglomerate Hitachi, delivers innovation through the development and maintenance of trains to drive sustainable connectivity. Hitachi Rail designs and manufactures signaling systems, components, and other technologies to manage and control new or upgraded railway systems worldwide.

Problem

In coordination with Advantex Network Solutions, Hitachi Rail needed to replace an outdated analog CCTV system with a new IP surveillance solution. The customer wanted to deploy IP cameras throughout the Hitachi Rail Ashford Depot in the southern region of the United Kingdom. However, the installation of CAT6, fiber optic cable, and additional networking closets threatened the project with high costs, complexity, and business disruption.

Solution

Having already used NVT Phybridge products, Michael O’Connell and Tony Easingwood of Advantex Network Solutions suggested leveraging the existing coax cabling using the CLEER family of Ethernet over Coax (EoC) solutions. NVT Phybridge CLEER switches deliver up to 50 watts of power (PoE++) and 10/100 Mbps symmetrical, full-duplex, over coax cabling with up to 6,000ft (1,830m) reach, which is 18 times farther than standard solutions.

Result

Hitachi Rail was impressed with the proposed solution and decided to move forward with the project. “The deployment was very straightforward with the training we received from NVT Phybridge,” said Michael O’Connell, Advantex Network Solutions. “We pre-built the entire system within our pre-build area, which allowed us to allocate each port to an EC Link+ (NV-ECLK-PLS) and then to its IP camera. When deployment began, each device was installed into its planned location.”

The new CCTV was installed within the Ashford Hitachi depot across all the external stabling, covering the whole perimeter and access/egress to the site. The NVT Phybridge EoC technology leveraged the existing coax cabling, eliminating the need for costly and disruptive infrastructure changes. Additionally, the system is easily expandable, as the customer can deploy extra IP cameras using the EC4 (NV-EC-04) adapter, which enables up to 4 IP endpoints from a single coax cable run. Hitachi Rail and Advantex Network Solutions were extremely satisfied with the project’s outcomes, having achieved incredible results for the customer.

  • Reduced network infrastructure costs by £350,000
  • Reduced deployment time by 14 weeks
  • Eliminated potential disruption of regular train schedules caused by construction and re-cabling work throughout the rail depots

Sustainability

Hitachi Rail’s mission is to “contribute to society through the development of superior, original technology and products.” One of its sustainability goals is to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% by fiscal year 2030. In line with the organization’s overall environmental sustainability and carbon reduction goals, NVT Phybridge EoC technology allowed the reuse of existing cabling, preventing over 635 kilograms of e-waste.

The customer was impressed and requested a no-obligation proof-of-concept to test the solution on-site at no additional cost. After a few simple setup steps, the FLEX switch created a robust and reliable PoE backbone for the IP cameras with far less intermediate equipment needed along the way.

Result

BETA Security used the NVT Phybridge FLEX switch to enable new IP cameras exactly where the customer needed them. BETA Security estimates the FLEX switch reduced network infrastructure costs by 65% compared to alternative solutions, including wireless and fiber optic installations. Although fiber optic cable was used, the FLEX switch significantly reduced the need for increased fiber optic cabling. “The implementation experience was quick and simple thanks to the intuitive GUI interface,” said Sergio Nava. “The software’s interface is easy to use and graphically superior to other solutions.”

The FLEX switch was simple to implement with the existing network equipment and reduced the overall deployment time by 33%. The FLEX switch delivers high-quality video feeds to the VMS in real-time. “It was a great experience working with the FLEX switch,” said Sergio Nava. “We also connected the FLEX switch to access control equipment to read equipment tags and plates in real-time.”

Casino leverages existing coax infrastructure to avoid disruption and long deployment times

3 minute read time

Summary

  • A casino in Puerto Rico wanted to deploy a new IP surveillance system but struggled with network readiness barriers.
  • The casino wanted to avoid laying new cable throughout the facility due to long deployment times and business disruption.
  • An Ethernet over Coax (EoC) innovation was proposed to overcome the customer’s digital transformation barriers.

Problem

A casino in Puerto Rico was relying on an outdated analog security system and wanted to upgrade to a modern IP surveillance solution. However, the casino first needed to overcome LAN readiness barriers to support IP cameras throughout the facility effectively.

The robust coaxial backbone supported the existing analog security devices. The casino was highly concerned with business disruption and the time required to install new CAT6 cabling throughout the building to support the new IP cameras. The organization was unwilling to partially or entirely shut down the casino for network remediation.

Solution

The reseller, EAS Systems, needed to find a solution to overcome the customer’s challenges before moving forward with the digital transformation project. EAS Systems discovered NVT Phybridge at a security expo and engaged with one of their subject matter experts for assistance. Considering the customer’s challenges, NVT Phybridge recommended the CLEER24 Ethernet over Coax solution.
