BOOK A MEETING
Historic Church

Historic Church Leverages Its Existing Infrastructure to Achieve a Quick, Smooth, and Cost-Effective IP Phone Deployment

3-minute read time

Summary

  • A historic church built in 1893 needed to upgrade 35 phones to IP.
  • The church wanted to avoid the trap of the traditional rip and replace approach to reduce costs while adhering to historic building preservation requirements.
  • Nuance Inc. used NVT Phybridge PoE innovations to deploy the new IP phones using the existing and proven voice infrastructure, avoiding unnecessary costs, complexity, and disruption.
  • The new IP phone system was deployed in just a day and a half, achieving a sustainable digital transformation by reusing existing infrastructure and protecting the historic site.

Challenge

A historic church in Indiana, established in 1893, faced a critical need to upgrade its communication system, as it relied on an aging Nortel phone system spanning multiple buildings, including the church office, school, and community building. This system relied on outdated onboard clocks and batteries that, once depleted, wiped all memory during power outages. As a historically preserved site listed on the National Register of Historic Places, any construction work, such as trenching through limestone for new cables, was not an option. The challenge was to find a cost-effective, non-disruptive method to deploy the new IP phone system without altering the building.

Solution

Nuance Inc., the reseller partner, recommended NVT Phybridge Power over Ethernet (PoE) network innovations. Having leveraged NVT Phybridge network innovations in past IP deployments with great success, Nuance Inc. was confident in the solution’s performance, capabilities, and ability to create better project outcomes for the church. NVT Phybridge PoLRE switches transformed the church’s existing CAT3-based network into a robust, secure backbone for the new IP phones. This approach allowed the church to deploy IP phones without invasive construction that could jeopardize the building’s historic status. The installation process was non-invasive, leveraging the existing 66 blocks and copper wiring to connect the new IP phones efficiently.

The PoLRE switch innovation delivers Ethernet and PoE over Single-Pair UTP cabling with up to 1,200ft (365m) reach – four times the reach of standard Ethernet switches. Nuance Inc. used the NVT Phybridge PoLRE switch innovation to help the church avoid costly network infrastructure updates and reduce project risk, complexity, and disruption – creating better digital transformation outcomes for all stakeholders.

Result

The deployment was completed in just a day and a half, significantly faster than the original estimate, which could have taken months due to permit processes and extensive contractor coordination. By avoiding the need to trench through parking lots or bore new conduits, the project preserved the church’s historical integrity, minimized disruption to daily operations, and improved the project’s ROI. Financially, the church significantly reduced network readiness costs, while the quick turnaround ensured minimal disruption. The new IP phone system prevents issues related to power outages or memory loss, problems that had plagued the outdated Nortel system. This was particularly important given the technical constraints of the previous setup, which severely limited the church’s communication capabilities. The NVT Phybridge PoLRE network innovation fully addressed the customer’s concerns, providing the church with a modern, scalable, and sustainable communication network that can support its changing needs well into the future.

Sustainability

By reusing the existing CAT3-based infrastructure, the church protected its historical heritage and avoided the environmental impact and costs of new construction. The result was a modern, reliable communication system that serves the church’s current and future needs while preserving its historic character. This case exemplifies how NVT Phybridge technology can deliver innovative solutions that respect and protect landmark sites while enabling them to benefit from the latest IP capabilities.

BOOK A MEETING
Calgary Twin-Tower Office Complex

3-minute read time

Summary

  • A high-rise office complex in downtown Calgary wanted to upgrade from analog to IP intercoms across multiple elevators, parkades, and emergency call stations to improve safety.
  • The flexibility of the NVT Phybridge portfolio allowed Convergint to easily adapt mid-project, leveraging existing two-wire and coax cabling where needed to ensure reliable performance in every environment.
  • The organization maintained its commitment to sustainability by minimizing electronic waste and aligning with its LEED building certification.

Challenge

A premier high-rise office complex in downtown Calgary was operating an analog intercom system that no longer supported modern communication, reliability, or integration requirements. The complex required a SIP-capable IP intercom solution to enhance communication and seamlessly support call recording. However, the project faced significant challenges:

  • Infrastructure complexity: 113 analog intercoms that operated on two-wire cabling needed to be upgraded with no head-end strategy in place.
  • Elevator integration issues: The existing two-wire runs in the high-rise elevator systems had multiple splits and junctions, leading to signal degradation that was too unreliable for IP.
  • Space and power limitations: Alternative solutions would have required 113 separate media converters and power supplies, demanding large head-end enclosures and electrical upgrades.
  • Operational disruption and cost concerns: A rip-and-replace strategy would have created major business disruption, cost overruns, and harsh environmental impact.

Solution

Convergint Technologies selected NVT Phybridge PoE innovations to overcome the project’s infrastructure and deployment challenges. The solution’s flexibility allowed Convergint to minimize head-end equipment, reducing space, hardware, and power requirements. Initially, the project team used the existing two-wire infrastructure to connect the new IP intercoms. However, the deployment team discovered new challenges in the elevators, as multiple splits, junction boxes, and poor grounding reduced signal strength. Fortunately, each elevator’s traveler cable had a spare coaxial cable, allowing the team to pivot without redesigning the network. The team easily incorporated the NVT Phybridge 1701+ extender innovations, leveraging the coaxial cables to enable IP intercom in the elevators.

Rather than installing network switches throughout the building, switches were centralized in elevator control rooms, delivering PoE power and data down the coax cable to intercom devices inside elevator cabs. The result was a simple and secure network that reduced IDF closet requirements and ongoing management costs. The upgraded SIP-based intercom system also integrated directly with the property’s Genetec security platform, enabling advanced functionality like audio call recording.

Result

With the support of Convergint Technologies and the flexibility of NVT Phybridge 1701+ innovations, the twin-tower office complex successfully transitioned to a modern IP intercom system without the cost, disruption, or complexity of re-cabling. By leveraging existing two-wire and coax cable runs, the team minimized risk, complexity, deployment times, and network costs – all while reducing physical space and ongoing energy requirements.

The new SIP-based intercom system now provides crystal-clear audio communication across all 113 IP intercom devices, including 45 elevators and six parkade levels. The system provides improved audio clarity, reliability, and responsiveness, critical for emergency scenarios in both elevator cabs and parking structures. The integration with Genetec further enhanced the system’s capabilities, enabling automatic audio recording.

Beyond technical performance, the upgrade had a positive operational and financial impact. Centralized switching reduced the need for distributed infrastructure, streamlining ongoing network management while lowering long-term operating costs. “This project was about helping the organization deploy a modern IP intercom solution to improve communication and safety,” said Alberto Olazabal, Convergint Technologies. “By using NVT Phybridge’s flexible solutions, we avoided unnecessary infrastructure costs and gave the customer a robust system that met their safety, sustainability, and integration goals. They now have a future-ready platform that delivers immediate value and long-term savings.”

Sustainability

The team demonstrated true environmental and operational leadership by embracing innovations that enabled the reuse of existing assets. The organization modernized communication and safety by repurposing its existing network infrastructure, reinforcing their unwavering commitment to sustainability. This forward-thinking decision reduced electronic waste and material consumption, perfectly aligned with their LEED Platinum certification and whole-building approach to environmental responsibility. This strategic move not only minimized the ecological impact of their digital transformation but also enhanced cost efficiency and operational excellence.

Sustainability in Network Design: Reducing Environmental Impact Through the Reuse of Existing Network Infrastructure to Support IP

3-minute read time

As organizations continue to adopt IP capabilities to improve security and communication, it’s important to consider sustainable infrastructure planning. By focusing on resource efficiency and reuse, businesses can significantly reduce environmental impact. NVT Phybridge solutions make this possible by enabling modern IP devices and applications using existing network infrastructure, supporting the core sustainability principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle – while contributing toward certifications like LEED and BREEAM.

The Environmental Cost of Outdated Network Thinking: The Trap

Many technology decision makers feel trapped, believing they must accept the high costs, disruption, and security risks of ripping and replacing network infrastructure to gain the benefits of IP capabilities. Along with the challenges above, this approach leads to:

  • High material consumption
  • Increased manufacturing, transport, and installation energy
  • Elevated carbon emissions
  • Substantial waste from discarded infrastructure

These factors collectively accelerate climate impact, deplete finite resources, and contribute to landfill growth.

Sustainable Network Design in Action: Avoid the Trap

A sustainable network design strategy considers not just performance and scalability, but also waste and material consumption. Reusing existing network infrastructure offers a direct way to:

  • Reduce material use and waste

NVT Phybridge long-reach PoE innovations extend power and data over existing coax or UTP cabling up to 6,000 feet, eliminating the need for rip-and-replace upgrades.

For example, the Fairmont Princess resort upgraded 300 analog phones to IP across its 65-acre property using NVT Phybridge PoLRE switch innovations. By repurposing existing single-pair UTP wiring, rack space, cooling, and other supporting infrastructure, the resort avoided more than 2 tons of e-waste, accelerated the deployment, maintained guest service continuity, and redirected savings toward enhanced capabilities.

Environmental Benefits of Cable Reuse

  • Reduced Material Demand: Avoids manufacturing and shipping new network cabling and equipment.
  • Minimized Waste: Keeps large volumes of electronic waste out of landfills.
  • Lower Energy Use: Reduces the energy required for production, installation, and transportation.
  • Conservation of Resources: Preserves finite materials like copper and fossil fuels.

Supporting LEED and BREEAM Certification

Technologies that enable network infrastructure reuse support green building certification goals:

  • LEED: Contributes to Materials and Resources (MR) credits related to waste reduction and lifecycle impact.
  • BREEAM: Supports scoring in Resource EfficiencyWaste Management, and Sustainable Procurement categories.

Organizations that adopt these sustainable practices demonstrate leadership in environmental stewardship and increase the market value of their properties.

Align Digital Transformation with Sustainability

Sustainability in network design is both responsible and practical. By reusing existing network infrastructure, organizations reduce waste, conserve resources, and achieve measurable cost and efficiency gains.

Summary

  • A U.S. school district in the northeast needed to transition from its end-of-life Nortel system to a new Mitel IP telephony solution across 10 buildings.
  • The district aimed to maintain voice/data separation, reusing existing infrastructure to minimize cost and complexity while creating secure and robust network pathways.
  • Back in 2011, the district had successfully used the NVT Phybridge UniPhyer to deploy its original Nortel system. Impressed by its reliability and performance, they chose to continue using NVT Phybridge PoE innovations to support the new IP telephony solution.
  • With support from Rel Comm Voice and Data Communications, the district used the PoLRE switch innovation (the next generation of the UniPhyer switch) to achieve a simple, secure, and cost-effective deployment.
  • Rel Comm used PoLRE switch innovations to help the district save over $100,000, avoid months of disruption, and ensure a robust network for the new IP telephony solution.

Problem

A U.S. school district in the northeast faced a critical challenge as its Nortel phone system reached end-of-life. With the manufacturer no longer in business, the district needed to upgrade its communications system across 10 buildings to maintain operational efficiency and ensure emergency readiness. School officials prioritized maintaining a separate voice network to ensure phone lines would remain operational even if the data network failed, which is critical for enabling reliable 911 access in classrooms.

Previously, the school district had implemented the NVT Phybridge UniPhyer solution, which had reliably supported their telephony needs for years. Due to their great experience with the UniPhyer, the school district preferred to adopt the same strategy of leveraging the existing and proven voice infrastructure to support IP.

Solution

The integrator partner, Rel Comm Voice and Data Communications, recommended the NVT Phybridge PoLRE switch innovation (the next generation of the UniPhyer switch) to help the district deploy IP telephony using its existing CAT3 infrastructure. For the second time, NVT Phybridge PoE innovations helped the district avoid the trap of ripping and replacing its existing network infrastructure, significantly improving the project’s return on investment.

The PoLRE switch provided the extended reach and power capabilities needed to support over 250 new Mitel IP phones across the 10 locations. To ensure a smooth transition, the installation was strategically scheduled during the summer break to avoid disruption. Two central technicians handled the head-end upgrade, while teams were deployed across campuses to replace endpoint adapters. This careful planning and execution enabled a quick and seamless deployment. The PoLRE switch innovation enabled the reuse of existing voice infrastructure, preserving voice/data separation. It also helped to maintain centralized power via an existing UPS system, resulting in significant cost and energy savings.

Results

The NVT Phybridge PoLRE switch helped the school district avoid the trap of a complete network overhaul, saving over $100,000 in infrastructure and labor costs. Operational reliability was enhanced with uninterrupted voice communications even during potential data network issues. The centralized UPS system reduced backup power requirements at each site, further decreasing complexity and operational costs.

Sustainability

NVT Phybridge network innovations not only delivered immediate financial and operational benefits but also aligned with the school district’s sustainability goals. By reusing existing CAT3 cabling, rack space, and cooling systems, the project avoided electronic waste and minimized the environmental impact. The continued use of a centralized UPS system contributed to energy efficiency across the district’s infrastructure. This initiative highlights how responsible technology decisions can support both operational excellence and environmental stewardship.
