What is Virtual LAN Segmentation, And How Does it Compare with Physical Segmentation?

As customers modernize from analog/digital to IP voice, whether in the Cloud or on-premise, voice is being layered on to a network not designed for voice. This can present a set of challenges, including QoS issues, poor performance and reliability, more complex network management, and voice and data teams at odds with one another. In this podcast, John Croce, CEO of NVT Phybridge, takes a look at these issues and then explores options. Croce quotes Albert Einstein, saying that “you cannot solve a problem using the same kind of thinking that was used to create it.” Croce challenges the notion that VLAN is the most effective strategy since VLANs are using the same thinking to solve a problem that created the problem. Physically separate networks may provide a better alternative. Croce outlines the NVT Phybridge approach that provides a more robust option with significant cost savings as organizations leverage existing infrastructure, compatible with major voice platforms, such as Cisco, Avaya, and Mitel.

One of the world’s largest food companies was relying on an analog communication system that could no longer keep up with the company’s needs. The organization wanted to modernize to Avaya IP across multiple locations. However, the organization needed to overcome critical network readiness challenges to support a new IP voice solution.

Challenge

A CAT3 network infrastructure supported the existing analog phone system. Based on traditional LAN design thinking, the food company believed it needed to rip-and-replace the network infrastructure and install new Ethernet to support the Avaya IP solution. Additionally, the organization was uncertain how to support the IP phones in all areas of the manufacturing facilities, given the 328ft (100m) reach limitation of standard Ethernet switches. The customer was not interested in the IDF closets required to extend connectivity to all areas of the buildings. The project was critical for business growth – but the network requirements appeared to be too costly, complicated, and disruptive to the business. The customer needed a modern solution to overcome its challenges.

Solution

Given the customer’s digital transformation challenges, JT Global Enterprise, the reseller partner, introduced the food company to the NVT Phybridge PoLRE® switch. The PoLRE switch delivers PoE over any new or existing single-pair UTP (CAT3) infrastructure with up to 1,200ft (365m) reach. That’s four times farther than a standard PoE switch. The customer was satisfied, as the innovation would eliminate rip-and-replace requirements and allow for a smoother modernization experience. In just a few simple setup steps, the PoLRE switch transformed the customer’s existing CAT3 infrastructure into a robust IP/PoE backbone with more than enough reach to support the new Avaya IP phones exactly where the customer needed them.

Result

The food company leveraged the NVT Phybridge PoLRE switch to deploy over 4,000 Avaya IP phones across 47 locations. JT Global Enterprise was able to leverage the existing and proven voice infrastructure to maintain a physically separate network for the new IP voice solution. The customer was also pleased with the simplicity of the solution. “Achieving IP connectivity first to support our new solution was where we exhausted most of our planning time. When we learned about the NVT Phybridge PoLRE product, we were able to move straight into implementation,” said the Sr. Telecommunications Manager for the food company. “The PoLRE switch solved every concern we had, especially around costs and complexity. Its simplicity, stability, and ease of deployment quickly provided the IP and PoE we needed to support our new system and features for all of our users.”

The food company took a proactive approach to find new and better ways to support its IP modernization objectives in a financially and socially responsible manner. The customer used NVT Phybridge PoE innovations to:

In early 2017, the Colombian Army finished construction on its state-of-the-art Army Aviation Logistics Center (Spanish acronym, CLAVE). Designed and built by the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, CLAVE is an over 9,000 square meter facility designed to provide support for the transportation, storage, distribution, and security of the Colombian Army’s aeronautical equipment. To comply with international standards for aeronautical logistical activities, the Colombian Government needed to implement a high-level security system. The facility required an IP surveillance system of over 100 cameras to monitor the entire facility and its surroundings.

Challenge

The Colombian Army had previously installed a Coax-based infrastructure to support an IP security system. However, the agency struggled to extend PoE to support the new Bosch IP cameras in all areas of the building. The 328ft (100m) reach limitation of standard PoE switches meant that they would need to install multiple IDF closets, which would be extremely costly and increase network complexity. CLAVE was unsatisfied with the traditional approach to network design, turning to project partners to help find an innovative solution.

Solution

Given the customer’s infrastructure challenges, Colombian distributor SAC was confident in recommending the NVT Phybridge CLEER24 EoC (Ethernet over Coax) managed switch. The award-winning CLEER24 enterprise-grade switch provides Ethernet and PoE+ over Coax with up to 6,000ft (1,830m) reach – 18 times farther than standard PoE switches.

In just a few simple setup steps, the CLEER24 transformed the Coax cabling into the power-packed IP platform needed to support the new Bosch IP cameras while eliminating the need to install costly IDF closets. “In our case where distance limitations were a critical issue, NVT Phybridge made all the difference when other solutions on the market could not,” said Paula Rosana Murillo, Business Development Coordinator at SAC. “Not only did the NVT Phybridge solution take the signal and transmit it through the Coax wiring to extremely far distances, but it also provided power to the IP cameras.”

Result

The Colombian Army was able to quickly and easily deploy over 100 Bosch IP cameras throughout the entire facility with virtually no disruption to operations. For the integrator, this was a professionally enriching experience. “NVT Phybridge, through its Colombian distributor SAC, facilitated access to technical training and support to ensure the proper usage of these products. This allowed the integrator to have greater confidence in the implementation of the technology,” commented Oscar Triviño, Project Manager in charge of the CLAVE facility construction. “The NVT Phybridge CLEER24 solution generated savings of more than $56,000 USD in wiring, electrical infrastructure, and manpower while connecting all cameras to the power source in the most effective way possible.”

The Colombian Government used the NVT Phybridge CLEER24 switch to implement improve the digital transformation project; eliminating risk while creating a robust IP platform. The solution removed all infrastructure barriers, service outages, security risks, network complexities, and wasted budgets. “The NVT Phybridge solution provides exceptional video quality. The Colombian Army is now able to take full advantage of its high-quality, state-of-the-art IP cameras and is incredibly satisfied with the project’s results.”

BOOK A MEETING

In 1990, networking equipment manufacturer, Kalpana, introduced the first multi-port LAN switch, which significantly enhanced Ethernet networks and paved the way for modern switch solutions. Cisco later acquired Kalpana in 1994.

For the next 10-15 years, the only devices connected to these networks were data terminals. During this period, the objective was to continually deliver an increasing amount of bandwidth to these data terminals, as demand for faster speeds increased.

Today, organizations are deploying an increasing number of internet-connected devices onto the local area network, including IP phones, IP wireless access points, and IP intercoms. These new devices are being layered onto a network that was designed for data terminals. However, IP and IoT devices have significantly different requirements than a traditional data terminal.

IP phones, for example, require real-time data delivery and are highly latency-sensitive. However, IP communication is being layered onto a switch fabric designed for near-time data delivery with an emphasis on delivering an increasing amount of bandwidth.

Given the technology available at the time, VLAN solutions were introduced to virtually segment the network. However, the local area network has become incredibly complex, difficult to manage, and costly.

Today, new switch innovations are available, and VLANs may no longer be the most effective strategy. NVT Phybridge switch innovations allow organizations to create a physically separate network for various IP devices and applications. Organizations can leverage any new or existing infrastructure to create a physically separate, robust, and secure Power over Ethernet backbone for any smart device. Additionally, these networks can be centrally converged using a single wire in a highly controlled manner. We have helped many organizations leverage their existing point-to-point network topologies to achieve the same five 9’s of reliability that was experienced with analog systems.

This allows businesses to create LAN strategies based on the requirements of the endpoint device. Frost & Sullivan refer to this as the “outside-in approach” in the Modern LAN literature. Cisco refers to this as “intent-based networking”. Both refer to establishing a purpose-driven network that is specifically designed to support the application and endpoint being enabled. This strategy can provide amazing benefits to the end-user:

  • No compromise to the existing data network
  • Simple and fast modernization to IP
  • Reduced cost and business disruption
  • Secure and reliable PoE network
  • A network that is simple for IT teams to manage

Many hospitals that we have worked with prefer to establish physically separate networks for voice and emergency phone systems because they need to maintain 24/7 up-time to ensure safety. This kind of reliability and performance is available for any organization, not just those in healthcare.

Spend less of your digital transformation budget on infrastructure and more on the ROI-driving factors, such as the endpoints and applications that provide business value. Is your organization looking to modernize to IP or the Internet of Things? Let us help you simplify network requirements while creating a robust and reliable PoE backbone for any IP device.

The business of Technology Podcast Series Episode 4

John Croce, CEO of NVT Phybridge, says that despite the enormous benefits of a Cloud-based communication system, many end users are still dissatisfied. “I have noticed that many providers are dismissing d-mark to desktop,” says Croce. He says that when problems with the communication system arise, it can be difficult to determine whether these problems are a result of the devices, the application, or the network. Croce continues by explaining that there can be “…a lot of finger-pointing between the network provider and the Cloud provider, which does not help to solve the issue”. The end-user doesn’t know where the problem is, and shouldn’t need to know either. What is paramount is that the issue is resolved as fast as possible.

In this podcast, Croce outlines the idea of deploying a purpose-built, point-to-point LAN topology to effectively support hosted communication solutions. Many organizations are leveraging Modern LAN principles by Frost & Sullivan; building a physically separate network to effectively support the hosted solution. As a result, each and every endpoint receives the required amount of power and data, as these endpoints are not competing for bandwidth with other devices.
