Understanding the Differences Between MoCA (Multimedia Over Coax Alliance) and BroadR-Reach Technology for Ethernet over Coax Applications
What is MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance)?
Multimedia Over Coax Alliance (MoCA), founded in 2004, was developed by the Multimedia over Coax Alliance as a standard for networking over coaxial cable. The technology was originally developed for residential applications to distribute IP television in homes using the existing coax cabling. Today, MoCA devices are also used as an Ethernet link using a coax cable.
What are the Limitations of MoCA Devices?
The maximum transmission distance for a MoCA device depends on the version of MoCA being used and the quality of the existing coaxial cable infrastructure. It’s worth noting that the actual transmission distance can be affected by various factors, such as the quality of the coaxial cable. The greater the distance, the lower the available bandwidth. Additionally, the presence of splitters or other devices, the type of MoCA adapter used, and the level of interference from other electronic devices will also affect the transmission quality.
The transmission speeds will also differ between the varying products available on the market. The MoCA transmission provides a shared half-duplex link between all directly connected devices. Therefore, the number and type of MoCA devices and endpoints will affect the overall available bandwidth and speed.
MoCA Technology Standards
- MoCA 1.0 has a maximum distance of around 300 meters (984 feet) and supports transmission speeds of up to 135Mbps.
- MoCA 2.0 has a maximum distance of around 185 meters (607 feet) and supports transmission speeds of up to 1Gbps.
- MoCA 2.5, the third version of MoCA, has a maximum distance of around 500 meters (1,640 feet) and can support transmission speeds of up to 2.5Gbps.
What is BroadR-Reach?
Developed by Broadcom, BroadR-Reach technology is an Ethernet physical layer that was originally designed for Ethernet over twisted-pair wiring in automotive applications. NVT Phybridge leveraged BroadR-Reach technology to develop a product set that builds on the BroadR-Reach signal format to allow for fast Ethernet transmission over single-pair UTP, multi-pair UTP, and coax cable at extended distances.
The NVT Phybridge CLEER24-10G switch extends Ethernet over new or existing coax wiring infrastructure, providing Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) connectivity over distances of up to 915 meters (3,000 feet) and 10Mbps up to 1,820 meters (6,000 feet).
Is BroadR-Reach Better than MoCA?
The short answer is yes, especially for commercial, industrial, and enterprise applications.
Unlike MoCA, the CLEER24-10G switch (using BroadR-Reach technology) provides a dedicated 100Mbps full-duplex transmission per downlink port. Therefore, there is no bandwidth sharing or degradation. Additionally, the CLEER24-10G switch offers a longer range than MoCA devices.
Both the CLEER24-10G switch and MoCA technologies are designed to provide high-speed data transfer, but they are intended for different types of use cases and employ different transmission technologies. The CLEER24-10G managed switch is an enterprise-grade solution delivering PoE+ with layer 3 functionality, while most MoCA devices are single-channel, unmanaged devices.
While MoCA is traditionally a home networking solution that uses existing coaxial cable, the CLEER24-10G switch provides robust and secure Ethernet over Coax at extreme distances, perfect for industrial, commercial, and enterprise network applications. Unlike MoCA devices that do not scale well due to their signaling format and crosstalk issues, the CLEER24-10G switch (using BroadR-Reach technology) provides industry-leading scalability and performance, even at extended distances.

Historic Hotel Eliminates Infrastructure Barriers and Deploys Wi-Fi Access Points
Historic Hotel Improves Its Digital Transformation Outcomes Using NVT Phybridge Ethernet over Coax (EoC) Technology
3-minute read time
Summary
Challenge
A property management group needed to deploy Wi-Fi access points in one of its historically preserved properties. The building relied on an outdated Wi-Fi system and wanted to improve connectivity. The organization wanted to deploy Juniper-Mist wireless access points but struggled with high costs and infrastructure barriers posed by the historic building preservation laws.
Historic preservation laws often prevent organizations from re-wiring network infrastructure, opening walls, or changing a building’s structure to protect its iconic appearance. If renovations are possible, they are bound by strict regulations, which increase project costs, project timelines, and business disruption. “Rewiring means construction, which in historic buildings is a very expensive proposition,” said the project’s Network Architect. The organization needed an innovative solution to overcome its infrastructure barriers and modernize its Wi-Fi capabilities.
Solution
After thoroughly researching products available to solve the network and infrastructure concerns, the customer discovered NVT Phybridge Ethernet over Coax (EoC) solutions and contacted NVT Phybridge directly to organize a no-obligation proof-of-concept. In just a few simple set-up steps, the NVT Phybridge EoC switches transformed the customers’ existing coax infrastructure into a robust and secure IP backbone for the new Wi-Fi access points. NVT Phybridge EoC switches deliver up to 50 watts of power (PoE++) and 10/100 Mbps symmetrical, full duplex, over coax cabling with up to 6,000ft (1,830m) reach, which is 18 times farther than standard solutions. The customer was extremely impressed with the proposed solution and decided to move forward with the project.
Result
The customer estimated that NVT Phybridge EoC innovations reduced network infrastructure costs by more than $60,000 and prevented over 2 tons of cabling e-waste, based on port count. “The NVT Phybridge switches cut [deployment] times in half by removing infrastructure complexity,” said the Network Architect. “NVT Phybridge made this project possible, regardless of cost. [The project] would not have been possible without the long reach EoC switches and the ability to pass PoE over coax.”
The historic hotel achieved its digital transformation objectives and met aggressive timelines while eliminating infrastructure concerns, high costs, and business disruption. The Juniper-Mist wireless access points provide robust and secure network connectivity to guests and employees throughout the property. “NVT Phybridge technology has expanded the types of properties we’re able to bring into our hotel portfolio as we are able to onboard them faster and for significantly less money,” said the Network Architect. “NVT Phybridge was the perfect fit for our requirements and essentially made the project possible.”

3-minute read time
Summary
Challenge
After surveying the customer’s environment, project partners determined the site’s network infrastructure wasn’t ready to support the new Poly IP phones. A CAT3 wiring infrastructure supported the existing communication system, and the project planners did not budget for the high costs of wide-scale re-cabling efforts across the organization. Concerned with business disruption caused by re-cabling requirements, the customer halted the project while the partners searched for an innovative solution.
Solution
Brad Batten from Innovative Telephone & Data Solutions introduced the NVT Phybridge PoLRE switch and organized a free, no-obligation proof-of-concept to test the equipment on site. The PoLRE switch delivers Ethernet and PoE over single-pair UTP cabling with up to 1,200ft (365m) reach – four times the reach of standard Ethernet switches. After a few simple setup steps, the PoLRE switch transformed the customer’s existing CAT3 wiring infrastructure into a secure and robust PoE backbone for the new enterprise communication solution. The customer was impressed with the PoLRE switch and restarted the project.
Result
The customer used the PoLRE switch to deploy over 1,100 IP phones across the organization without disruption or downtime, giving employees the latest communication applications and capabilities. “The NVT Phybridge PoLRE switch reduced deployment complexity as [the customer] did not need to schedule its operations around disruptive cable installations,” said Brad Batten. “This alone cut labor costs significantly as less overtime and off-hour work was required.” The PoLRE switch helped the customer save an estimated $750,000 USD in network infrastructure costs. “The reach capability of the PoLRE switch solved the distance requirements without re-cabling,” said Brad Batten. “Without the PoLRE switch, we would have needed to increase the data infrastructure, deploy new IDF closets, fiber, and other electronics to support them.”

TeleDynamics & NVT Phybridge Help Chelsea Piers Modernize Communication Without High Costs or Downtime
3-minute read time
Summary
The Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex is a 28-acre waterfront sports village located between 17th and 23rd Streets along Manhattan’s Hudson River. The major public recreation center offers sports amenities, event spaces, youth programs, competitive leagues, childcare, and much more.
Problem
Chelsea Piers wanted to upgrade its outdated communication system with a cloud-based IP PBX telephony solution. However, network readiness requirements threatened the project with high costs, extended timelines, and physical limitations caused by the 330ft (100m) reach of standard switches. Chelsea Piers needed to deliver PoE over its existing single-pair UTP cabling to IP devices across the vast 28-acre sports village with minimal downtime.
Solution
Given the customer’s digital transformation obstacles, the reseller partner, TeleDynamics, recommended NVT Phybridge and its long reach Power over Ethernet technologies. TeleDynamics had used NVT Phybridge products in the past and recommended the PoLRE line of products. The NVT Phybridge 24 and 48-port PoLRE PoE switches deliver fast Ethernet and PoE over single-pair UTP cabling with up to 1,200ft (365m) reach – four-times farther than standard switches.
TeleDynamics helped Chelsea Piers organize a no-cost, no-obligation proof-of-concept to test the technology in its environment. After a few simple setup steps, the PoLRE switch transformed the customer’s existing infrastructure into a robust and reliable PoE backbone for the new IP communication devices.
Result
TeleDynamics used NVT Phybridge PoLRE PoE switches to support the deployment of more than 300 new IP communication devices across the 28-acre sports village. “Everything went smoothly, from the early planning stages to the activation of nearly 300 devices,” said Stuart Sheinbaum, Director of Communications at Chelsea Piers. “The NVT Phybridge switch was instrumental in ensuring this massive project was a success. When we consider the sheer physical size of the environment of four city blocks and over 500,000 square feet, there was a real potential for error and complexity. The PoLRE switch helped us complete the massive cutover in just one night, flawlessly deploying over 300 devices with everything up and running the next business morning!”
TeleDynamics allowed Chelsea Piers to leverage its existing network infrastructure to avoid the risk, high costs, and complexity of re-cabling. “If we were to re-cable, we would have needed to build out several IDF closets per pier, with fiber uplinks between them and switching capacity/throughput for each,” said Stuart Sheinbaum. “The ability to use our existing CAT3 cabling throughout our widespread facility was a key determining factor in moving forward with the NVT Phybridge PoLRE switch. Re-cabling all our different locations with CAT6 cable would have been a monumental and prohibitively expensive task. The PoLRE switch was our golden opportunity to seamlessly upgrade our communication systems to a state-of-the-art system at a reasonable cost.”
“Working with the NVT Phybridge team was a breeze,” said Rolando Giz, Director of Sales, Service, and Implementation at TeleDynamics. “Their teams worked hard to get us competitive pricing in a timely manner. They also got us a demo unit which helped provide proof-of-concept to the end user. The NVT Phybridge team met very aggressive timelines while dealing with historic supply chain issues. I look forward to our next project with NVT Phybridge.”
