An edge network is the outer layer of a network infrastructure. Edge networks connect end-users, and the devices they use, to the core network. The edge network enables IP devices and provides access to applications. The edge network includes various components, such as routers, switches, access points, and servers.
What is a Core Network?
The core network is the backbone of a network infrastructure. It is responsible for transporting large volumes of data quickly and reliably between different network components. The core network typically comprises high-speed routers and switches that handle large traffic volumes. Core networks also connect various networks, such as connecting a local network to the internet.
What is Edge Computing?
While closely related, edge computing and edge networks are two different concepts. Edge computing is processing data near the generated source rather than sending it to a centralized location for processing. Edge computing brings computing resources closer to the devices that create and use the data, enabling faster data processing, reduced latency, and improved application performance.
In networking, two frequently used terms are core network and edge network. Although these terms may seem similar, they represent different network components. Understanding the differences between core networks and edge networks is vital in building and maintaining an efficient network infrastructure. Edge computing and edge networks are closely related since edge computing devices often rely on edge networks to transmit data. Edge networks provide the connectivity needed for edge devices to communicate with each other and the core network.
Edge Networks vs. Core Networks
Function: The core network is responsible for transporting large volumes of data between different network components, while the edge network connects directly to IP devices and provides access to applications.
Location: The core network is located at the central part of the network infrastructure, while the edge network is at the outer layer.
Components: The core network is composed of high-speed routers and switches, while the edge network is composed of routers, PoE switches, access points, and servers.
Traffic: The core network handles large volumes of traffic. The edge network enables IP devices and real-time applications, which are often latency sensitive.
How Does a Power over Ethernet (PoE) Switch Improve Edge Networks?
Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches are a crucial component of modern edge networks. They provide several benefits that improve an edge network’s functionality and efficiency.
Simplified Network Design: PoE switches eliminate the need for separate power sources for network devices such as IP cameras, wireless access points, and VoIP phones. PoE switches simplify network design and reduce cabling costs by transmitting power and data over a single copper cable.
Flexible Deployment: PoE switches offer flexible deployment options, allowing devices to be placed in locations where power outlets are not readily available. This provides greater flexibility in network design, as devices can be installed in previously impossible areas.
Enhanced Efficiency: PoE switches enable efficient power management, providing power only when required. This means that devices can be turned off when not in use, reducing energy costs and the overall environmental impact of the business.
Centralized Management: IT administrators can monitor and manage network devices from a single location, reducing the need for manual device configuration and software updates.
Improved Reliability: PoE switches provide a reliable power supply to network devices, reducing the risk of power outages and downtime. This ensures that network devices remain operational and critical services are not disrupted.
Cost-Effective: PoE switches are more cost-effective than traditional switches and power sources, especially PoE switches with long-reach capabilities. These devices eliminate the need for separate power sources, reducing installation and maintenance costs.

The customer saved over €20,000 in infrastructure costs using NVT Phybridge EoC solutions. As a result, the customer purchased all cameras required for the project simultaneously instead of in different stages, which would not have been possible if they had chosen to re-cable the facility. “Anixter feels very supported in proposing NVT Phybridge solutions, because they offer excellent pre-sales and post-sales support,” said Susana Vila, Anixter, Account Manager.
By utilizing the long-reach capabilities of NVT Phybridge solutions, the customer eliminated the need for additional IDF closets to centralize network connectivity and overcome infrastructure barriers. The customer also enhanced security by maintaining a physically separate network for the new IP surveillance system. The customer and the project partners were extremely satisfied with the outcome.
When asked for their thoughts on the NVT Phybridge solutions, the IT Director for the customer commented, “the high power delivered by NVT Phybridge PoE switches has allowed us to provide stability to our CCTV networks, avoiding loss of service in those cases where the switch electrically feeds multiple cameras. It also allowed us to have a connectivity solution where the camera is more than 100 meters away, without the need to install a power cable for the camera, thus avoiding additional costs and simplifying installation.”

Quickly Deploy IP Devices in Elevator Cabins Using Existing Traveler Cables
Quick Guide for Enabling IP Devices in Elevators
NVT Phybridge networking solutions can grow modularly from 1 to 4. Therefore, if the number exceeds four units, it must be treated as a new solution with the difference in remaining equipment. Below are four scenarios for transmitting IP signals through traveling cables in vertical transport. The solutions below provide the ability to connect IP signals from the elevator cabin to the machine room.
Before starting a project, the following questions must be answered to identify and support the best solution:
What is the distance of the traveling cable?
What is the potential power consumption of the IP devices in the elevator cabin (this is to determine if power can be delivered from the switch in the machine room or if the device(s) must be locally powered)?
What types of cables are available within the traveling cable?
What is the total number of devices to be placed in each cabin?
What is the total number of elevators communicating with the machine room?
Are you connecting to a Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch in the machine room?
Once these six questions are answered, the design phase is very simple. Four applications can be used, and the cable type must be known. These four applications can be connected in Star or Bus configuration.

BOOK A MEETINGEdge Networks: Connecting End-Users to the Core Network
What is an Edge Network?
How Does a Power over Ethernet (PoE) Switch Improve Edge Networks?
Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches are a crucial component of modern edge networks. They provide several benefits that improve an edge network’s functionality and efficiency.

BOOK A MEETINGConsumer Goods Distributor Reduces Deployment Time and Complexity During Digital Transformation
NVT Phybridge and Anixter Improve IP Surveillance Deployment for European Consumer Goods Distributor
3-minute read time
Summary
Challenge
A major European consumer goods distributor needed to upgrade to an IP surveillance system for better video quality and monitoring capabilities in one of its Spanish warehouses. The organization relied on an outdated analog surveillance system in the warehouse, which was becoming increasingly inefficient. However, the sprawling property immediately posed infrastructure barriers for the customer, as the existing analog cameras were long distances from the IDF closet. Although the customer knew it was imperative to complete the digital transformation, they could not accept the time, complexity, and cost of ripping out the existing infrastructure and replacing it with CAT5/6 Ethernet cabling.
The integrator, Telefónica, knew they needed to provide the customer with a solution that would allow them to complete the digital transformation without the cost and disruption of re-cabling, as other resellers had advised the customer to spend budget on replacing the existing infrastructure. If the customer chose to re-cable the entire facility, they would need to complete the project in various stages, making certain facility areas inaccessible. The organization required a unique solution to overcome its infrastructure barriers and complete the IP surveillance upgrade.
Solution
Anixter and Telefónica recommended NVT Phybridge long-reach Power over Ethernet solutions to overcome the project’s barriers. Having successfully used these products before, both Anixter and Telefónica were confident in recommending NVT Phybridge Ethernet over Coax EoC solutions to help the customer improve its digital transformation. In just a few simple set-up steps, the NVT Phybridge EoC switches transformed the customer’s existing coax infrastructure into a robust and secure IP backbone for the new IP cameras. NVT Phybridge EoC switches deliver up to 50 watts of power (PoE++) and 10/100 Mbps symmetrical, full duplex, over coax cabling with up to 6,000ft (1,830m) reach, which is 18 times farther than standard solutions. The customer was thrilled at the technology’s ability to provide PoE to cameras furthest from the IDF closet.
