NVT Phybridge COVID-19 Corporate Update – December 2020
Like many organizations, the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic have impacted us at NVT Phybridge. Since March 2020, we have effectively adjusted to our new normal to strengthen the health of our business, ensuring current and future customer and partner needs are met in an effective and timely manner.
Procurement and Order Fulfillment
Initial pandemic lockdowns across the globe impacted manufacturing capacity and the modes of transportation that move raw materials and finished goods. Despite the pandemic, demand for electronics and electronic parts did not decrease. As expected, when short term supply gets tight, companies order even more to stockpile for the medium term, leading to further shortages.
NVT Phybridge has faced the same risks that all electronics manufacturers have faced. However, we are in a strong position as our entire CHARIoT line of products is manufactured in Canada. We rely on major carriers, partners, and distributors to get our products to end-users, and we continue to foster strong relationships with these players. We have also made appropriate adjustments to production and raw material procurement.
Many learnings have been incorporated into our administrative, production, and procurement processes that strengthen our ability to meet customer expectations, even in uncertain circumstances.
Completing Digital Transformation Projects
At the onset of the lockdowns, many businesses were forced to shut down or adapt to public health guidelines. Many large digital transformation projects were paused as the pandemic initially impacted the global economy.
Based on partner and end-user feedback, we remained confident that we were witnessing a delay in demand that we needed to manage, not an overall drop in demand. In the months following, some projects moved ahead as businesses adapted and took advantage of building availability after shifting to a work-from-home model.
Sales, Marketing, & Support
The sales and marketing landscape has shifted drastically since March 2020. As tradeshows and in-person workshops are no longer a viable option to reach potential clients, we have adjusted our focus to digital marketing, online marketplaces, and virtual selling. In place of physical meetings and site visits, we are hosting online webinars and have implemented a robust online meeting system. Potential clients and partners can easily book an online meeting with the NVT Phybridge sales team. We have also increased our digital marketing efforts while strengthening our relationships with distributors.
Fortunately, the nature of our technology has helped many of our customers complete their digital transformation projects. As a technology that enables the reuse of existing infrastructure, end-users and integrators are avoiding the re-cabling, construction, and renovation work on-site, simplifying deployment while adhering to social distancing measures.
Some of our end-user customers continue to experience project delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We continue to support their needs with discount extensions and other programs.
We are very proud of the technical support team and our efforts to continually improve during 2020. While maintaining our live technical support, we launched a website chat feature, which has experienced heavy usage from the outset. We will continue to provide effective support over the phone, video calls, and website chat.
Looking Ahead to 2021
We have laid a solid foundation upon which to grow and succeed in 2021. We will continue to focus on partner relationships, digital marketing, and promotions to ensure every organization can experience a simple, secure, and cost-effective digital transformation. The Internet of Things has supported and will continue to support businesses as they adjust to our new normal.

BOOK A MEETINGSt. Anne’s Church Deployed IP Camera System Using Existing Wiring
NVT Phybridge Case Study: St. Anne’s Church
Verkada VSaaS Deployment Made Possible with NVT Phybridge PoLRE Switch
Video: 9 min watch time
Story: 3 min read time
Summary
St. Anne’s Parish vestry wanted to upgrade from its failing local NVDR and CCTV security system, comprised of 14 low-resolution cameras throughout the two buildings’ interior and exterior. The staff requested five additional camera views bringing the total to 19. The vestry wanted to deploy Verkada 4K ultra-high-definition IP cameras that store video in the camera, requiring a fast and reliable IP network. However, given the building’s age, St. Anne’s could not remove and replace its existing CAT3 network infrastructure due to high costs and complexity.
Solution
John Purnell, an IT industry consultant and Co-Chair of the St. Anne’s IT Committee, led the digital transformation effort for St. Anne’s. With several years of experience under his belt, Purnell was confident that an NVT Phybridge PoLRE switch would be the perfect solution for the project, including the church building in the circle and two buildings just down the street. Purnell discovered NVT Phybridge at a communications technology conference and had previously used the technology in several airport projects.
Purnell reached out to NVT Phybridge, detailing St. Anne’s digital transformation objectives and barriers. NVT Phybridge was happy to help and quickly supplied a PoLRE24 switch to support the upgrade to IP. The PoLRE24 switch delivers Ethernet and PoE over any new or existing single-pair UTP (CAT3) infrastructure with up to 1,200ft (365m) reach, four times the reach of standard Ethernet switches. NVT Phybridge also provided EC-Link Adapters after discovering coax cabling during implementation.
Result
Completely satisfied with the solution, St. Anne’s Church deployed a robust IP surveillance system to ensure safety inside and outside of the church and the parish house. “The IP cameras can store up to 30 days of video while performing analytics, which was not possible with our old NDVR,” said Purnell. “This allowed us to dramatically reduce network load and increase security, which was not possible with an NVDR or cloud-based solution.”
The reseller team from BlueCapIT was trained on deploying the switch within one hour, and the deployment was finished just a few hours later. St. Anne’s Church saved a tremendous amount of time and money by avoiding the traditional rip-and-replace process, considering the historical value and community significance of the buildings. “The NVT Phybridge Power over Ethernet switches allowed us to meet strict Historic Preservation requirements and quickly deploy IP cameras without re-cabling,” said the Rev. Dr. Manoj Mathew Zacharia, Rector of St. Anne’s Parish. “It’s incredible that we can support 4K ultra-high-definition IP cameras using the existing category-3 cable. NVT Phybridge helped prevent seven difficult cable runs and the disruption that comes with pulling cable. I am thrilled to have avoided the rip-and-replace of existing cabling while not compromising on performance.”
About St. Anne’s Church
St. Anne’s Church, located in Annapolis, MD, was established in 1692 and served as the Chapel Royal for Maryland. Following the American Revolution, the church building was rebuilt in 1792, which served the community until it was destroyed in a fire on Valentine’s Day evening, 1858. In less than two months, architectural drawings were presented for the third St. Anne’s Church. Construction was quickly completed, and the first service was held in July 1859. Francis Scott Key and several signers of the Declaration of Independence worshipped at St. Anne’s.
St. Anne’s Church is one of the most important landmarks in the Maryland State Capital, situated in the center of the main traffic circle. As an iconic symbol of Colonial Annapolis, preserving the historic building was very important to the City. In need of more space in the 19th and 20th centuries, the St. Anne’s established a Parish House for administration, programs, and a preschool about 100 yards down Duke of Gloucester Street.

BOOK A MEETINGPodcast: Overcome the C-Suite IoT Dilemma and Easily Deploy IoT Solutions
NVT Phybridge Podcast: C-Suite IoT Dilemma
Podcast: Overcome the C-Suite IoT Dilemma and Easily Deploy IoT Solutions
NVT Phybridge CEO, John Croce, shares what he calls the C-Suite Dilemma in this episode of the NVT Phybridge podcast!
C-suite decision-makers know that organizations with IoT capabilities are more competitive and better able to adapt to today’s landscape – especially when considering the challenges presented by the current global health pandemic. However, these same decision-makers struggle with the financial, physical, and resource requirements needed to implement these solutions. This is the c-suite IoT dilemma.
Croce explains the root cause of the c-suite dilemma being “outdated local area network design principles that have not evolved with the times.” IT teams are using the same LAN design principles used in the ’80s when the only devices connected to the network were data terminals and printers. “Today, we look to connect all kinds of “things” within the Internet of Things using the same outdated thinking.
However, these modern devices have very different requirements and require a modern infrastructure to support them. These devices include Wi-Fi access points, IP communication devices, sensors, digital signage, and IP cameras. Supporting IoT solutions using traditional network design thinking has resulted in higher network costs, increased disruption, greater complexity, less reliability, and security concerns. This is the dilemma.
Overcome the C-Suite IoT Dilemma
In 2018, Frost & Sullivan introduced Modern LAN principles. These principles provided local area network design enhancements that incorporate modern Power over Ethernet innovations to address all aspects of the dilemma that decision-makers are facing. Frost & Sullivan suggest that organizations reuse their existing network infrastructure to avoid the traditional and outdated rip-and-replace upgrade model. This eliminates many of the previously-stated pain points, allowing organizations to deploy IoT solutions without high costs, unnecessary risk, business disruption, complexity, or security concerns.
Croce continues by explaining that NVT Phybridge has had over a decade of success and has helped customers collectively save over $200 million in infrastructure costs while simplifying and accelerating their digital transformation projects. These customers include government agencies worldwide, the leader in space research, and many fortune 500 companies.
NVT Phybridge offers a no-obligation proof-of-concept, allowing organizations to test the technology in their own environment. This provides proof and peace of mind to the customer, knowing that the solutions will live up to their highest expectations.

BOOK A MEETINGAmerican Institute for Cancer Research Deploys IP Phones Using PoLRE Switch
NVT Phybridge Case Study: American Institute for Cancer Research
The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) advises the world on the latest information and data regarding cancer prevention. The organization funds research on the relationship of nutrition, physical activity, and weight management to cancer risk. AICR then educates people worldwide about choices they can make to reduce their chances of developing cancer.
Challenge
Forward-thinking puts the American Institute for Cancer Research on the leading edge of cancer prevention. By applying that same forward-thinking, the AICR realized it needed to modernize its phone system to improve communication capabilities. AICR wanted to replace its existing analog phone system with a new, modern-day IP voice solution. The current phone system was supported by a CAT3 wiring infrastructure. Project partners suggested a rip-and-replace strategy in which the CAT3 wiring infrastructure would be replaced.
However, the American Institute for Cancer Research operates in a heritage building in Washington, D.C., and any building modifications or additions would be subject to severe restrictions. Cable installers estimated that 96 new cable runs would need to be added to the five-floor building, an option that proved to be too expensive for this non-profit organization.
Solution
The AICR’s telecom provider (VAR), McEnroe Voice & Data, suggested the use of new Power over Ethernet (PoE) innovations and introduced the customer to NVT Phybridge. The NVT Phybridge long reach PoE switch delivers fast Ethernet and PoE over single-pair UTP cable with up to 1,200ft (365m) reach – that’s four times the reach of standard Ethernet switches. Using the NVT Phybridge switch, the organization could avoid the costly and disruptive rip-and-replace process by leveraging the existing CAT3 cabling infrastructure for the new IP phone system.
“The installation was absolutely painless,” according to Michael McCarn, Director of Information Technology at AICR. “Our VAR sent four cabling techs on the day of our cutover. Two techs moved from desk to desk identifying the lines to be moved, while two more stayed in the phone closet and moved the connectors for each phone from the old analog system to the new NVT Phybridge switch. The switchboards were done within minutes, with the rest completed within two hours.”
“I was skeptical at first; I didn’t think the switch could deliver the smooth and painless installation promised by our VAR. I wasn’t even convinced the devices would work at all,” said McCarn. “However, having worked with the same VAR for more than 15 years, I decided to trust them – and I’m glad I did.”
Result
The modernization from analog to IP was completed within just 2 hours without high costs, complexity, or building modifications. The AICR now has a robust and reliable IP backbone to support its current and future communication needs.

BOOK A MEETINGDinwiddie County Uses NVT Phybridge PoE Switch Innovations to Improve IP Phone Deployment
NVT Phybridge Case Study – Dinwiddie County
Located just 25 miles south of Richmond, Virginia, the municipality of Dinwiddie County serves nearly 25,000 constituents. The local government needed to modernize communication in the buildings that several departments worked out of, including Law Enforcement, the Board of Education, Parks & Recreation, and the Health Department.
Challenge
County administrators wanted to move approximately 160 users across multiple locations to an IP unified communications solution to improve voice and collaboration capabilities. However, layering voice applications and IP phones onto the County’s local area network (LAN) presented significant physical, financial, and operational barriers. The County did not want to be responsible for the ongoing management of a complex network, across multiple locations. This strategy would also require significant infrastructure changes and re-cabling efforts to accommodate a new IP phone system. Re-cabling costs were estimated at $26,000, a hefty price tag for any municipality striving to deliver optimal service at a reasonable cost. The County needed a simple, non-disruptive, and cost-effective solution to maximize taxpayer dollars and improve its return on investment.
Solution
Dinwiddie County turned to its telecommunications partner for advice, who recommended NVT Phybridge Power over Ethernet switch innovations. The NVT Phybridge PoE switch delivers Ethernet and PoE over a single pair of UTP wiring with up to 1,200ft (365m) reach, which is four times farther than standard PoE switches.
The NVT Phybridge switch solution allowed the County to leverage its existing and proven voice infrastructure to create a robust IP backbone for the new IP phone solution. Since the County was using its existing voice infrastructure, it was able to keep voice and data on physically separate networks to reduce cost, improve network design, and simplify ongoing LAN management.
Result
The NVT Phybridge switch allowed Dinwiddie County to quickly modernize its locations due to the repeatable, predictable, and scalable deployment methodology. Deployment was smooth and straightforward since the existing voice infrastructure was standard across every site.
Additionally, ongoing network management is simple, thanks to the physical separation of voice and data traffic. The NVT Phybridge solution also provided plenty of room for future expansion, if necessary.
Dinwiddie county took a proactive approach to find new and better ways to achieve its IP modernization objectives in a financially and socially responsible manner. The County was able to modernize communication capabilities for its 160 users in record time while saving over $26,000 in network infrastructure costs. Government employees experienced no disruption during implementation.
